Word 2016 in Depth 1st Edition

This book is outdated quite often so if you follow the instructions to accomplish something you are stepping off a cliff that may end up nowhere near your goal. One simple example: the section "Determining what template a document is using" seems like a pretty simple task. In the listed 2nd step of what we are suppose to do, it says to click on "Advanced Properties" [pg. 290]. Well, my copy of Word 2016 - brought in June 2017 - doesn't have an "Advanced Properties" to click on. So, you are left guessing what to do which can be very time consuming and sometimes it can lead to complete failure after a huge expenditure of time. It could be that Microsoft has changed Word since the book was published, I don't know. All I know is that what is in the book and what exists in reality are not the same all too often.On the other hand, there is a lot of detail in this book that is useful sometimes and that is missing in most other books. . So, it's kind of hit and miss. Sort of like Microsoft products themselves. The fact that to work with Tables in Word 2016 you have to jump around four different tabs (Home, Insert, Design, Layout), each with their own subset of Table manipulation commands, instead of having all the table commands co-located is crazy and just makes everything more difficult. Given the illogical way Microsoft has designed the software, any author that tries to be comprehensive about Word 2016 has a huge uphill struggle on their hands. Given the difficulty of the inherent illogic of the software, I gave this book three stars for at least doing as well as they have done.There is a web version of this book that presumably has updates. I have not used it. Why? I have a life. This book is almost a thousand pages. Do I really want to complicate my life even more by doubling that page count so that anything I read in the hard copy book I have to assume there might be a different web version of the same paragraph or chapter? Like I said, I have a life.Sept 14, 2017 - As I come across more examples of where this book and Word 2016 diverge, I knocked the star count from three to one. There is simply wrong information in this book. One example would be where templates are located. This is necessary to navigate to if you want to change a template. They are not located using the path instructions from this book. The usefulness of this book has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. At least half the time I have to go to the web and search for the instructions I need to accomplish some task using Word 2016. This book is approaching uselessness.

I have used this several times for an older version of Microsoft Office. It is easy to find what feature you want to use. I now have Microsoft Office 365 and would suggest getting a more current book.

I am on page 600 of this 900 (!) page book. So not finished yet but have read and processed enough to evaluate. I used to treat tech books strictly as reference and would only use them as prompts to brush up on a technique I had not used recently. But some time back I started reading the entire book and noting those areas that would be useful to me in the future even if currently not used. I must confess that Word is a much deeper application than I realized. I read a section every day so as not to get too overwhelmed. The writing is clear and the screenshots easy to follow.The only addition I would wish for would be downloadable data for charts and merge fields to facilitate working in those areas. For those of us that don't generate a professional level of input, that would be useful. For instance, I have tech books on Photoshop that include downloadable samples to follow techniques covered in the book. helpful.

This could be a valuable addition to someone's technical reference library; it is easily navigated by links in the table of contents that enable you to go directly to the spot you want. It is so much easier to read about what you want by simply clicking on the hot links and it brings you directly to the subject you want. This book is very well written with lots of screenshots to illustrate the task at hand. I would recommend this book to anyone who uses Word 2016; the only shortcoming is that some of the instructions apply only to Windows version of Word and are not enabled in Word for Mac.

I think this book is adequate for new users of Word, even though it is titled "In Depth." I am looking for Word feature/task/tool design intent and troubleshooting, so I can deconstruct the columns and sections in the Word document that results from exporting from an Adobe PDF. As a matter of fact, if you place sections in a Word document with formatting such as columns, and then later want to edit content or paginate, it is a real pain! This book only mentions that you can create sections in a document. It may have more feature/tool listings than other books, perhaps, but it does not give in depth information on feature/task/tool design intent, use, and most importantly troubleshooting.

Used for work; helpful to not need to find out what's different by going online ( distracting), wading through tech support ( multitasking on hold), or asking a colleague (there weren't any).

Great reference. Use it all the time. Microsoft "stinks" when it comes to finding/figuring out how to do certain things in their programs. I think they're sadists who like to hide features instead of promoting them. It's only through books like this that I can navigate some of the easy, moderate, and difficult aspects of the program.

It's instructive. Main reason I bought it was for the new WORD 2016 Styles/Outlining/Numbering instructions.

Excellent book. I was struggling with form design, but this book is so well written and laid out, that I was up and running in minutes.Also, despite being very thick at 974 pages, it lies flat when opened, so you dont have to struggle to keep the pages open.

You want to know about word then this is the book to have, it covers so much and I find this book easy to use, as I have the Kindle version on my IPAD which means for me that I can flip back and forth with out losing my place.

Working on complicated mail merge so extremely useful!
