Rothco mens Boonie

Rich dark coyote color. Material is thicker than some and close knit. Top thick enough to block out sun. Brim is firm and slanted downward, not straight out. I machine washed it and dried on moderate heat. Came out fine. very little shrinkage or deformation. Leather keeper for chin strap not very sturdy. But this is the best of the “cheap” boonies I have found on Amazon. If all colors are as tough as coyote color hat, I recommend this brand and style.

Just like my hat issued to me when I was in the military. Very durable and fits well.

It's kind of flat, the brim hasn't got any angle to it so it just sticks straight out, not descending like a conical surface. Also the material is stiff but sort of waterproof (I found out when trying to soften it up.) Looks pretty official and has military tags and labels inside. Has 4 big vents with screens in them! Also has that chin strap inside to keep your hat on when there's a sandstorm trying to blow it off! The one thing I really dislike is how floppy the brim gets on this kind of hat, so the solution is to feed a circle of thin (20 gauge) BRASS wire around more than once through that U shaped, sewed covering on the outer edge. Measure & cut the wire (it's about 7 feet for this hat.) It's only tricky the 1st time, but is how the Army Rangers do it. Before you push the wire in, bend about an inch back so there's not a sharp point trying to pass through the cloth layers but it's like a barb, with the "V" you bent preventing the wire from coming back as you push it. A needle-nose pliers might help to grab and push the wire. Start at one of the 2 sewn places where you can feed the wire carefully between the stitching. The cloth overlap will determine the direction you feed the wire. You should be able to easily push the 1st loop almost all the way around, maybe even more. Then you can locate the barb-end with your fingers and push and pull it around. Figure it out! The 2nd loop takes longer, but it needs to be done for the edge to be strong. When the last of it is inside the cloth edge you can adjust the tension between the outer and inner part of the brim and even reshape the brim to a better, rounded fit closer to the head. (BRASS WIRE because it won't rust.)

It works. Feels slightly smaller than my Issued Boonie, but that being said. It works the same.

Liked: does the job keeping head and ears from roasting to a crinkly crunch. Is inexpensive. Exact head size can be ordered. Stitching good. Dislikes: comes crunched up. Requires steam ironing on highest synthetic setting to get out. 50/50 nylon cotton blend is a bit itchy and hotter than 100% cotton. This blend does wick out slower though in rain. That’s good. Overall could be better but good enough for my 3 season canoe trips.
