Q: Where do you connect the load to on this board

The end opposite the usb connection in marked “bat + and bat-“ you can solder your wires from there to the battery. I tend to use wires with small crocodile clips on each end, then attach the other end to the battery using a couple of small magnets.

Q: Can input voltages below 5V be used? like small solar panel

You really need the full 5.0v to make full use of this battery charging device. It will deliver to the battery 4.2v so if you are going to be below that voltage it simply wont work.

Q: can I charge my batteries in series or only single cells

Single cells. Charging lithium cells in series would require a higher voltage and could be dangerous if not done right. To charge in series you want a proper bms board, they're not expensive (5 for around £10) and if its a 3cell 12v circuit you're working with should do the trick as it can charge each cell individually search "3s bms 12v" it requires a higher voltage input though so not usb friendly. If you want to charge from usb you'd need to charge in paralell.

Q: if the load terminals are the same as the battery terminals, how can it possibly prevent the battery from being discharged to a flat state

Probably by measuring the charge current. Voltage = current times resistance.
