JVC HARX500 Full-Size Headphones (Silver)

I've had the JVC HARX500 -over ear- Headphones now for a week. What I wanted: 1. Replace existing (in)ear-buds due to wear and poor sound quality. 2. Be able to hear more bass, mids, treble...better sound quality. 3. High comfort and stylish, as I commute on the train everyday to work & school. 4. Good price. 5. Noise cancellation I already own a pair of professional studio headphones (Sennheiser), which i've had for more than 5 years. But they are big and not for wear 'on the street' - I just use them for in the music studio. I've been drumming for 13 years -both in studios & live on stage-, and I have high expectations when I listen to music, whether at home, in the car, or on my mp3 player (Phillips GoGear vibe). I need to hear it all & it annoys me when the sound isn't right, like the basic EQ levels. I am always changing them to suit the song I'm listening to. I listen to a wide variety of music; from 90's grunge to temporary psychadelic trance to jazz and talk radio and everything in between. That said though, I am a college student, so I didn't expect to be able to find something with high quality sound for what I was able/willing to spend. I read pretty much all the reviews for the headphones in my price range and decided to get these JVC HARX500's. At first the 300's seemed enough but for $7 more you get the Neodymium Driver. JVC has always been a favorite of mine when choosing any music related electronics and I am, again, really happy with these headphones. The sound is well distributed between crispness and lower range. The structure is sturdy, yet flexible and not too heavy. It meant all my expectations: 1. Good replacement for my old in-ear plugs, and I will add that it probably will be a for any, as the over-the-ear provide so much more depth to the sound. 2. I think the bass is really nice. Not too muddy or too much. The mid's are right on par, and the treble is cristal clear. If you have an equalizer, I suggest fooling around to find your own personal sound preferences. 3. These headphones are really comfy. You can adjust them every which way and (like mentioned in other reviews) the 'muffs' can turn to fit your ears. They are not too big, so I can easily put them in my backpack, and on the train, or walking around they, don't say "look at me". The cord is too long for my comfort, but I just tie it up, and stick it in my pants/jacket pocket. The headphones also even keep my ears warm in the winter! 4. The price is, for such a high quality product of its kind, really unbeatable. 5. I can turn this bad boy up and not hear a thing when your talking to me, or other background noises like trains (stations), cars, buses. I just 'tune out' and enjoy the music! In short, if your looking for these things I mentioned in new headphones...get this one and you wont be disappointed.

Wow!! Just received today. Don't know where to start. These are truly fantastic in every regard! I listen to all kinds of music and have owned expensive stereo systems in my car and home. This review concerns using the HA-RX500's listening to music through my PC. I am very particular about quality. I want to hear all the details in a piece of recorded music and want background parts at the right sound level in relation to the other instruments/vocals in a song. These headphones have AMAZING sound--not for $20--just amazing sound in their own right. I read a review that said they have better sound quality than a $120 pair of headphones, and I couldn't agree more. Sound is rich and full. Can hear all layers of all types of music. Bass is very impressive as are the highs, but what truly impressed me, and which I have found lacking in two other sets of headphones I recently ordered, is the quality of the mid-range sounds. The headphones are incredibly light-feeling on your head and the ear pads are soft and very, very comfortable. The long cord is absolutely no problem and looks and feels substantive, unlike some other cheap, very thin cords. They are excellent at outside sound dampening. I researched so many headphones for hours and bought a pair of JVC HAV-570 "Super Bass" headphones. Admittedly, they were only $13, but they had many of the same specs as the X500's, i.e., 40mm drivers, etc, but the sound on the X500'S is literally five times better, and this saying a lot, because I was mildly satisfied with the cheaper pair (which got four stars overall on Amazon). However, wanting more, I purchased a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M30 Professional Headphones through Amazon for $40. They lacked range and were tight and felt smothering when worn. They don't come close to the JVC X500 in sound quality. I returned them and was going to settle for the other JVC's until I saw these on Amazon). I am not an expert at describing what makes for high sound quality but I know that when someone says, when describing headphones, that they hear parts of songs they couldn't previously hear well with other headphones, that means something, if accurate. That description is absolutely true with these headphones. It's not so much you will hear sounds that you never heard at all, it is that you will hear instrumental parts and vocals (such as some back up vocals), much clearer and stronger than you hear them with other headphones. I must re-emphasize that the sound from these headphones is incredibly rich and full, especially if your system has a graphic equalizer that you can admust to your particular likes. You cannot go wrong with these headphones!! I am almost in disbelief that they cost only $18, seem solidly made, are extremely comfortable and the sound will impress you to no end. They are heaven!

I purchased these because I wanted inexpensive knock around computer over-the-ear headphones. I also own the JVC HA-RX700 o-t-e headphones as well and will include the specs and my observations. The 500s definitely do not have the audio dynamics that the 700s present. The specs speak for themselves on these two models. Not as much bass and mid-range when compared to the RX700. The bass is okay for the price. You get what you pay for between the two. The 500s are light weight and do not over burden the ears or the head. I have average size ears and they just fit into the ear pads. I have found the 700s, after an hour, to feel heavy on the head but still comfortable. The ear pads on the 700s are a bit bigger and fit around my ears very well. The 500s does not keep out all the exterior noise as well as the 700s. Neither do a perfect job but the 700s due to having a better build and better audio dynamics keep out more extraneous noise. I tried out the 500 and the 700 on my Blackstar HT-5R amp. Definitely much more dynamic audio with the 700. The 500 can't even keep up with the 700s ability to go deep into bass or reproduce the mids and highs. Here are some specs to compare: ..... I did notice that the 500 has a thinner cord than the 700. What that means I am not sure. I believe the 500s are discontinued so one can still shop around and find a good closeout price. I paid about $20 American in January 2013. The RX700s, ran about $34.00 when purchased in June of 2012. The RX700s are worth the extra $10 in terms of overall sound. If you feel you will be using the 700 for longer than an hour you may want to find some comparable phones that are lighter. Or you can do more neck exercises. Will more expensive headphones, $50-150, be more comfortable? I don't know. I would hope that would be the case. I gave the RX500s four stars because of the price paid, relative comfort over an hour and the the sound delivered. ------------------------------ UPDATE 04/25/2014: The Rx500s are still going strong and still intact. No breakage or wearing on the cord. I use them exclusively inside the home on my computer.

I run a podcast and I was searching for an affordable solution that provided three key factors: Comfort, Clarity, and Compactness. The comfort factor was the most important because if you are going to have a few of your guests wearing these for an hour, they need to feel like nothing is there. Clarity for the quality of the sound and to make sure your guests hear themselves clearly. Compactness for a podcast that has to go to multiple places. I tested these JVC HARX500 against the following: JVC HARX330, Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi Dj Style, Vogek On Ear Headphones with Mic, Tascam TH-02, Koss UR20, and Panasonic RP-HT161-K. Here is how they stacked up: JVC HARX330: decent clarity and lower profile for over the ear headphones but they really hurt my ears because they didn't completely cover my ears Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi Dj Style: If this purchase was for just listening to music or doing something other than my needs, this would have been my choice. The set was comfortable, albeit a bit on the heavy side and the clarity was unsurpassed. By far the best of all. However, these headphones had a good seal around my ears and I was unable to hear ambient noise. As a podcaster, I need to be aware of A/C units running in the background and I was unable to hear mine when wearing this. For my purposes, I need to be able to hear things that the microphone may or may not pick up. Vogek On Ear Headphones with Mic: I tried these just to see if on-ear headphones would work. Not for the comfort factor. However, these won the compact prize. They could fold up to the size of my palm which was a bonus. Tascam TH-02: with all the great reviews, I thought this was going to be a winner. However, it was very bulky and didn't fit on my head properly. Good quality sound but still not great. So it didn't win the prize for comfort because of its weight. These however did fold so they could have gotten a bonus point for compactness. Koss UR20: These things were a beast. This means it didn't pass the compact test. However, the sound clarity was terrible. I was amazed at how distorted voices were. It sounded like every time I talked I could hear myself clipping and I didn't hear that with any other headphone. Panasonic RP-HT161-K: Decent slimmer profile but didn't pass the comfort test. The JVC HARX500 met 2 of the 3 conditions I felt were the most important, comfort and clarity. After putting on these headphones, I just felt like I could easily have them on for hours without any worry of fatigue or my ears hurting. The sound coming from the speakers was true to self and was great for the price point. As mentioned above, it still allows some ambient noise to penetrate so you can hear background noise and isn't completely noise isolation which I needed. These fail the compact use case but they are still slimmer in profile compared to the Monoprice and Koss ones. I can overlook that for the top 2 needs

Pros: + Sound + Durability + Comfort + Quality + Price Neutral: - Size After going through 4x Sony MDR-V150 headphones over a period of 2 years and witnessing their mediocre durability and comfort firsthand, I decided to upgrade to something better. The JVC HARX500 are just what the doctor ordered. Sound and quality: amazing! Durability and quality: exceptional! Price: extremely affordable! These headphones are superior to the MDR-V150 in every area except size, which is a small price to pay to acquire better specifications. Highly recommended for home and office use! UPDATE 3-16-14 - It's been 6 months since I purchased 2x of these headphones and they're still going strong! No issues or defects! Kudos to JVC for manufacturing such an excellent product! UPDATE 10-19-14 - 1 year, 1 month, 3 days later: One of the foam strips came off from the top part of one headset. Unfortunately, I could not reattach it using gorilla glue or epoxy, so I simply threw it out. The other headset (used by me personally) is going strong physically. Both headsets still function like new so I'm sticking with my original rating. UPDATE 4-27-15 - 2 years, 1 month, 11 days later: No change whatsoever. I've seen both pairs dropped excessively due to unawareness of the surroundings and nothing happened! Despite being made almost exclusively of plastic, these sound-emitting devices are suprisingly durable and can withstand much more mishandling than the MDR-V150s. Definitely recommended as a daily driver! UPDATE 6-30-18 - 4 years, 8 months, and 21 days later: Headphones are still kicking! Approximately 10 month ago, the ear pads on both headphones started falling apart. I've discovered that any replacement ear pads (aside from the OEM ones, which are impossible to find) will fall apart within 2 months of daily use. I ended up purchasing 90mm replacement ear pads that were listed for the Razer Kraken Gaming Headset (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WJFZ220/ref=psdc_13880181_t1_B0772GMDCP). They fit VERY snugly onto the headphones and while not as comfortable as the OEM ones, they are capable of withstanding daily use. Excellent choice if your headphones still work but the ear pads are falling apart.

I previously had the Sennheiser HD202 but they stopped working and I was looking for another affordable pair to replace them. I bought these based on the positive reviews on Amazon. These are okay for the price but I think next time I will invest more into my purchase to have a good, durable pair that I will use often. These are not the most comfortable headphones. Compared to the HD202 they are heavier and I would appreciate some cushioning under the plastic band. The pads do not fit perfectly around the ear since they are round and at first I thought it would help with noise isolation but they actually feel uncomfortable especially right under the ear. To me the sounds are okay, but a little muffled and not very clear. They also sound like they lack resonance and depth. When I listen to bass-heavy music, the bass isn't that powerful either. I can't say much about noise isolation because I only use these at home, but they do block out some outside noises. Overall, I would say that you get what you pay for. While they are okay for the price, I am not that happy with their performance and I will not repurchase.

Pros: Low cost. 70 ohms impedance. 105dB sensitivity. Amazing sound quality for a pair of $26(shipping included) cans. They are accurate highs, detailed midrange, tight bass, and just nice clear sound. I love the angled drivers (for more specs go see JVC's website). These are comfortable, and sit well on the ears for many hours at a time They also look nice, and dignified--if you're a Beats "hater" like I am, they won't taint your image. Cons: My only two main gripes are the cord and the headband. The cord- It is too long, and too thin/too fragile. Though I solved the length issues with a twisty tie. And if you like your cans 'on the go' these might not be your cup of tea. The headband- Now many aspects to the design of these headphones are clean cut, simple, and sensible. That said, it stops at the headband. It is not so much uncomfortable, but rather weird instead. Instead of a simple cushioned area, it has these four separate pleather things, that are quite unappealing, and sometimes distract me from my listening experience.I'll probably remove them, and modify the headband later on. Verdict: If you're an audiophile on a tight budget, and want something for your stereo system, or computer, these might be just the thing for you. Even though these have 70 ohms, they still sound really good on my iPod - with a flat EQ, or EQ off. Yes, I would recommend these. They have a delightful dynamic sound stage. These are great for just about every genre. I don't know if these have a burn in time, since I just got them, but they sounded excellent right out of the box...Just mind the cable. My personal uses: Replaced my Turtle Beach EF:X12 headset. For home use. PC Gaming with an Antlion ModMic 3.0, on a Creative SB Zx. For the wide variety of music I listen too. I also use these on my bass amp for quiet playing... And also scoffing at Beats by Dre peasants(shots fired). Some music I tested these with: Meshuggah, Yes, King Crimson, Sausage, Primus, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Rollin's Band, Bauhaus, Brian Eno, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Blackalicious, Thelonious Monk, Beastie Boys, Mastodon, Beck, Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030, Mahavishnu Orchestra, David Bowie, James Brown, and many...many more.

These are comfy, I love that the...muffs? phones? rotate on a vertical axis with your ears. They have thin cushioning to protect the top of your head from the hard plastic. Cord is quite long, I'd say at least 6 feet but haven't measured. I've bought them at least 3 times. They sound fine to me, but I am no audiophile so take that with a grain of salt. I have found they last multiple years...not sure what happened to the first pair, but I have a pair at work and a pair at home. I think before these, maybe 8 years ago but who knows, I rocked a pair of HARX330s, which were also good.

Quality is quite good, picks up even minutely low frequency sounds.

I have owned many JVC products over the years and I am a big fan, especially of their portable equipment. Time was when JVC made the best boomboxes on the market and their high end hifi was impressive too. I have recently returned to headphones after 20 years. I still have my old Sennhiesers HD40s from 1986 but they do not suit most modern equipment since the output is low and it comes with the larger jack as standard. So I bought these JVC HA RX500 based on a recommendation for the HA RX series on Canuck Audio Mart. These were $30 plus shipping from Amazon and I got them in about a week. I ordered the white models but to me the colour is more silver. Very pleasant design though not particularly disctinctive. Construction is lightweight plastic. Nothing special. But so are the HD40s and mine are almost 30 years old and still going strong. Comfort is adequate but my old HD40s are lighter and more comfortable. I initially plugged them into each of my 4 JVC boomboxes that span from the 1980s to the early 2000s. All still work like new and the sound on each was balanced and neutral whether for jazz, rock or classical. There was no brightness, no boomy bass and a neutral midrange. Sources were tape, tuner and cd. I then put it on my home stereo through a McIntosh amplifier and a turntable from Clearaudio. Again, very good balance top to bottom. Absolutely no problem listening to these for a couple of hours on what is a fairly revealing system. What's missing? Well you do not get that sense of 3-D soundstage like better headphones or the detail, transparency, speed and air of the B&W speakers that front this system. My son is something of a headphone guru with a very good ear and a number of better headphones from AKG, B&W, Grado, Monster and others. These will not appeal to fashion conscious bass lovers, Monster has that wrapped up. Nor will it match the midrange purity of the B&Ws, the resolution of the AKGs or the unique musicality of the Grado. But those all cost between 3 and 10 times what these JVCs do. For $30, this is very good value. Strongly recommended.

I bought these head phones so I could plug them into my guitar amplifier, allowing me to play my electric guitar any time of day or night without causing any annoyance to my neighbours. The long lead on the headset also makes it easy to move about without having to take the headphones off. The head phones will also plug into the TV so I can watch and hear the progammes when my partner has gone to bed without disturbing her. The head phones are very comfortable and light weight; they look and feel a quality product and are very reasonably priced so I would highly recommend them.
