Faith in Disney Restored
I will begin my review by saying I was a late adopter to Wii U. We originally got the Wii version of this game for our youngest boy and while the game was fun and allowed him to be creative you could just tell the Wii version was not all it should have been. A few examples would be lack of two player design in toy box mode, or no two player support in the actual playsets. Another and more significant shortcoming was the toy boxes themselves in the Wii version. The amount of objects you could add was fairly limited, not all toys are available in every toy box. In short the Wii version tried to be something awesome and it just fell on its face in my opinion. A few days back I decided to bite the bullet and bought a Wii U and a new version of the game. I was about 30 minutes into my buyer remorse when my youngest started to play the game. The beginning of the game is an introductory sequence for the game but also a primer for game control. You begin as a spark floating around and then the game explodes around you. New landscapes, characters and music unfold around you. It was amazing to see the fire in his eyes and I could almost hear the plans for the worlds he was going to end up creating. The difference is night and day; better graphics, better two player options both for design and gameplay, better controls, infinitely bigger toy boxes and options in the boxes. Another cool thing about this version of the game is that it can be played completely from the Wii U Gamepad; which is a plus if you want to take back the TV. Bottom line, I know that this game is going to require some investment from parents and I think that sucks since it is not a cheap game to begin with...but you will not regret buying this game for a moment. If you have a Wii and have been thinking about upgrading to a Wii U, pull the trigger, do it today; worth every penny; the Wii U version is at least 100 times better in every way.

Amazing and a full of suprizes.
This game is fun, for the sake of being fun. It answers to no one. It takes a bold stand and walking in the footsteps of games like sky landers in hopes of a making a name for itself. Without the success of games like sky landers this game may not have decided to go the route of using real world toys, but it would not have had the same effect. Seeing these toys come to life is a dream to kids the first time they see the enthusiasm they have as they come to life in the game world. I am 26 and a huge geek and a Disney fanatic. I first think of Indian in the cupboard because they toys themselves are the characters and not what you see in the movies. I can not wait for wreck it ralph, toy story and nightmare before Christmas to come out. If your kids are younger, they will not have a problem growing into the game, as some of the content takes time to get used to. I am impressed with the set of tools you are given which aid in creating your own games. Yes your own games, your kids can be creative and this may inspire them to test the waters else ware. The game lets kids be kids, and who has not dreamed of their toy box coming alive, and no characters are more fun than Disney`s.

Not a Skylanders clone
I bought the Disney Infinity starter set for my wife and I for Christmas. We had played Skylanders many times and a lot of things lead one to believe that Disney put out their own version of it. In a lot of ways that is true, but there are a lot of plusses and minuses between the two. Skylanders, for those that don't know, is a series of games that allow the player to buy physical "toys" that can be placed on a "portal" that allows the player to play that character in the game. The player can swap between the huge array of toys that Skylanders has available at pretty much any time and the only real restriction is that toys from a newer series can't be used in the older series' game, which is to be expected to some degree. One would think with patchable games nowadays they'd be able to add this kind of thing fairly easily, but game publishers rarely look backwards. For the most part that is where Skylanders ends. This is where Infinity really takes off. Infinity's Toy Box mode is kind of like Minecraft in that a player can create their own levels and then play them. They can also upload them to allow other players to play or download other levels. Disney has been pretty good about adding levels on a regular basis to keep the user interested. The problem that I found though is that there is no real filtering in the online Toy Boxes, which could become a real problem as more and more come online. Also a good majority of the levels that even Disney has put out are pretty lack luster. So yes there are new levels to check out, but they aren't exactly "worth" it. The included "Play Sets", which are the actual story levels of the game are for the Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Monsters University. As such you get one character for each Play Set in this starter set. The problem though that I didn't discover until after I bought the set is that a player can not use, say, Mr. Incredible in the Pirates play set. So if you want to play these story modes in a co-op you need to pick up some more characters. The Side Kick or Villain packs will take care of this. BUT this is probably my biggest gripe with Infinity. This is a massive misstep of Disney and the game designers since is means that the player has to switch characters for each level/story. Players can't use their favorite character all the time which I think takes away a huge amount of "fun." Also it is annoying for buying characters that don't have a Play Set, like the Jack Skelington character. If Disney were to put out decent add on levels this wouldn't be that big of an issue. The last piece here is a very subjective thing. When playing co-op the characters do not share the full screen space, but instead the game uses a split screen method where each player gets their own half of the screen. The problem with sharing the screen space like Skylanders does is that the screen can get muddled as players can get confused with where their character is. Split screen has the issue where it takes away from the overall perspective for each player. If a player isn't use to this it can get very distracting to see another player's action right next to theirs. With a shared screen though the overall perspective is limited as it tries to keep the character size to a certain level which limits how far each character can be from the other. This makes an open world design impossible. This is where the split screen method works. This is a subjective thing where my wife prefers it one way and me the other. Ultimately Disney Infinity is like a Skylanders clone that misses a lot of pretty key points, but adds a whole world of potential and longevity that Skylanders can't touch. I hope that Disney wises up and removes the limitation of which characters can play the story modes, but that's doubtful. Will have to wait for Infinity 2 for that most likely.
