Give it time
Once you know how to use it, it's great. It's more of a pressure point tool and gentle rocking back and forth that brings relief, not so much rolling on it. I love the results so far

I used one of these at my acupunctors office. It really has helped my lower back!
This is excellent for my SI joints. I'm loving it!

Wonderful for the Erector Spinae (vertical back) muscles
This back roller is my new favorite thing! I exercise (cardio and weights), I stretch, I see a chiropractor regularly, and I get a therapeutic massage every two months. Unfortunately, I also work in a chair 6-8 hours a day, after a long driving commute. This means a very tight back and hip area. I purchased this to supplement my exercise and stretching routine. I also have very tight lower back muscles (natural default, unfortunately); keeping them flexible and stretched out is my solution to no back pain. I use my back roller for about 5 minutes, 2-3 times a day, depending on how tense I am feeling. I start with my middle back. I support myself according to the directions, and relax into the prongs. I hold myself there for 3 deep, slow breaths, then move the roller down, rinse and repeat. I hold the pressure for 5 breaths when I get to my lower back, and I use it safely all the way down to my SI joints (the dimples in the back of the hips). Then, I reverse the process, and work back up to my middle back. After my time with my back roller, I feel amazing. My entire body feels looser, and more balanced. My hip and leg muscles relax, and my lower back allows itself to unclench. Because of these results, I have started using it before and after a workout session; I have noticed improved results, both in performance and post-workout recovery, in just two sessions! If it seems too good to be true, just remember -- the muscles on either side of the spine support your entire human body in a vertical position, all day long. This back roller provides direct pressure, just like a masseuse would, and makes it very simple to self-massage areas of the body that are normally difficult to access. It does take some getting used to, and it's crucial to read the directions carefully and proceed as far as your body is comfortable with. With proper use, this tool can become invaluable - it certainly is for me! I am already looking for a more compact version to bring with me to work.

Melts tension away
You should NOT use this if you have any spine injuries. The roller is made of wood, though it's not one solid piece, which was somewhat disappointing. The rubber rings on each end do a good job of keeping it from sliding around as you roll on it. I work at a computer all day long and have problems with tightness in my neck and back almost constantly, in spite of daily workouts. I got the back roller a couple of weeks ago and have used it a half dozen times since then. It comes with a four-page write-up that's completely useless and reads like it's been written by a non-native English speaker on drugs. To use the back roller, you put in on a hard surface and lie down so that your neck falls in the groove between the two bumps. You then bend your knees, put your hands behind your head and gently push upward with your feet so that the roller rolls a little farther down your neck. You stop as soon as you feel any tension and stay there for a couple of minutes and repeat until you get down to your lower back, making sure your spine stays in the groove the entire time. The point is not really to roll but rather to let the bumps press into the erector muscles and relax away any knots. It works great and definitely helps relieve tension in the rhomboid muscles, which is a huge problem for me and usually for anyone who spends their day sitting in front of a computer. The first time I use it (I usually do two or three runs-through from neck to lower back), it hurts A LOT but I definitely feel better afterwards and it works the knots out better than the Shiatsu massager I have. Overall, I think this is a must-have is you have back pain, though it only really helps if the pain is muscle strain and it works better on the upper and middle back than the lower back because of the way the spine curves.

Everyone should have one of these.
I remember my grandmother having one of these but a much more Crude design. This product is more finished and rounded for comfort. The rubber O-rings help keep it straight if you are self rolling your back. It moves tight muscles and definitely cracks the bones. Absolutely fantastic product at a great price.

Amazing !!
AMAZING ITEM. Suffered thru multiple chiropractors. Some good, some not so good, always on the multi year plan. Their therapy results would last until I left their office...... Felt good there, but.... I am a 70 year old man with a physical job, taking EAA aminos that improve physically and brain health. Beta-Alanine and EAA's do work! After performing the roller exercise my back was straight for an extended time during the day. Working bent over during work and usually having a "hunch", that was gone! Now after visiting my last Chiro appointment, well, last time I'll be there. The Dr. get's into this "usual therapy" repetitive adjustment. This back roller will take a couple of weeks to really improve the spine to stand straight, it works !! You will be exited after a couple of sessions, but every other day will offer the best results. Too hard/not comfortable
This hurt as we tried using it. It was not helpful for our backs. We had hoped it would stretch us out and provide us some comfort and be able to use to pop our backs. It was very hard and even hurt (even after reading the instructions and trying it different times and doing it slowly). The wood seems very well made but does not roll or work well.

Great quality!
My dad has had one for as long as I can remember, now I finally have one too. Seems to be the same amazing sturdy quality one my dad has had for 30+years.

Excellent
I have used a similar product a few times a week for many years to stretch my back joints the opposite to their normal direction. I accidentally left it somewhere in Europe this summer while travelling (yes, I would take it on holidays with me!). I was really upset that I had lost it, but then I found this one. A perfect replacement!

Really good investment. If your back hurts when tou use it, it's because you need it. When it stops hurting, you know you are better.

Not comfortable but it works and it is durable
I bought this to relieve upper back pain and cramping that I get on occasion. I hesitated between this one and the host of other options that are made of synthetic rubberized material. I read a little on this one and was drawn to the traditional design and the groove in the middle. (some designs don't have this but they all should for spine safety). All I can say is that it works. Read the small manual that comes with it for instructions and make sure your spine is aligned within the groove (easier said than done). A mirror is practical for this. Also, don't wear any top clothing when using it as it might get caught in the rubber rollers/washers on both sides. With most of your upper body weight resting on this roller when you have your feet up, the hard wooden knobs are uncomfortable but the effect is similar to a very vigorous back massage. A few minutes is all that is needed. It is really well made and should last forever.
