Description

Gene McDaniels had a brief but successful career as a pop singer in the early 60's when Gene signed a contract with Liberty Records and worked with producer Tommy 'Snuff' Garrett, who supplied Gene with songs written by the Brill Building stable of songwriters. In all he had six top forty hits, all in 1961 and 1962. Later, he began to go by the name Eugene McDaniels and recorded some soul-styled social consciousness records for Atlantic in the early 70's. He also wrote a number of songs as Eugene McDaniels, including 'Feel Like Makin' Love', which was a number one hit for Roberta Flack in 1974. Here we have Gene's second UK Liberty Records album coupled with a 1962 US compilation featuring songs such as 'Green Door', 'Tower of Strength' & his first, biggest hit 'A Hundred Pounds of Clay'. Digitally remastered, slip-cased with new notes. BGO. 2005.

Gene McDaniels

This is a terrific CD for those of us who remember Gene McDaniels back in the 60's. It combines two albums into one. Hit After Hit features his Liberty releases "Tower of Strength," "Chip Chip," "Point of No Return," and his biggest hit, which can still be heard on some oldies stations today, "A Hundred Pounds of Clay." The big band-jazz album, Sometimes I'm Happy is a bonus. Great singer, great orchestra, great songs. I thoroughly enjoyed this CD and thought it was a bargain price.

Gene McDaniels deserves to be rated as one of the best of the US male singers of the early 1960s

This was an unexpected gem - I remembered the hits, but this album provides so much more. Gene McDaniels deserves to be rated as one of the best of the US male singers of the early 1960s.

Too Jazzy

Gene McDaniels was a great pop singer and I really liked his charted hits. All of those hits are here but there are also too many songs that are jazzy and these are not so good.

I'm very happy with Gene

At last the Cd version of one of Gene McDaniels best albums: SOmetimes I'm happy.....The orchestrations are wonderful (Gerald Wilson f.i.) I like Green Door, In a Sentimental Mood. But why combine with the Hit after Hit album? There's a much better Spanish Lace or the Wonderful world of ...album. It seems to be impossible to left out 110 Pounds of Clay. And Surprise, Surprise!. There are 31 songs on the CD. The Inlay mentioned only 30 songs!
