Twists and turns; things you don't see coming. Even if you do, you still want to watch.
Dame Helen and Sir Ian are wonderful actors. Watching them do what they do (act) is a pure treat. I have watched the movie twice and will keep watching it. The viewer will never guess the ending. Nothing is as it seems. Yes!!!!!

Brilliant Acting, Unappealing Structure
I would watch these actors read the phone book, which is why with great anticipation I sat down to watch this film. They are brilliant. The storyline is a good one but the way in which it's put together just didn't work for me.SPOILER ALERT: *****The big "twist" is revealed in a matter of minutes, entirely in flashbacks and in an extremely cold, detached manner--delivered without emotion and almost like the actress is reading a news story. The viewer doesn't feel empathy for her; which is problematic because we want to be rooting for her in this revenge she's perpetrated. The blames does not fall on Mirren's delivery, but rather due to the way in which the screenplay is written and perhaps in the direction. The audience knows from the beginning that Mirren's character is not who she seems to be, and is waiting for the turn to come in the story. This may be due to the way the film was presented in the trailer...but may also be due to the fact that there is always something "dangerous" that just lurks in Mirren...she comes across as extremely intelligent, strong, and cagey. Perhaps she was miscast in this role. Giving her a "stroke" didn't weaken her, either, so it simply jumped out as a ploy. I knew the entire time that she was conning "Roy." Once the trip to Berlin and the ensuing confrontation regarding McKellen's true identity occurred--the story just got weak. Why on earth would "Betty" stick around with him? This serving as the impetus to pool her money with his seemed entirely implausible.I DO applaud the fact that a film was made with two leading roles going to mature people. There needs to be more of these films made because there are plenty of people 50+ who want to see stories about characters their age. I hope to see more of these types of films.

Are liars ever good?
“The Good Liar” is a film that deserves vigilant study. Don’t wait until the actors arrive. There are carefully hidden clues that are in plain view as the titles are typed across the screen. Look at the papers in which the credits are typed. They allude to a tale that starts well before 2009, when the action of the film seems to begin. The use of an antiquated typewriter also whispers a plunkety allusion to an earlier era.As the traps are set, lies can be detected. Just who is the good liar? When Betty and Roy meet in the restaurant, she’s learned not to be late. Keep that in mind. Their first confessions of deceit to one another are revealing of their characters … or so they seem. The film must be watched twice so you may detect all the quirky indications that are missed the first time … for instance, the unexplained emotions that flit across Mirren’s face that don’t seem to align with a woman falling foolishly in love with an accomplished and suave con man.All the actors are excellent. The protagonist is brave and triumphant. The antagonist is despicably corrupt. But who is who? This is an excellent film that reveals layers of deceit that slowly unfold a tragic story that culminates with victorious crescendo in the end. The moral of the film is that there are good liars and there are superior liars: beware when the twain shall meet.

NO RECOMIENDO

Pristine Condition
The DVD arrived as scheduled. It was packed with other items ordered. The outer box and all contents were not damaged. The cellophane wrapping on the DVD was pristine.

Excellent acting, average script.
What on first blush appears to be a simple tale of Roy - a nasty conman - planning of robbing a wealthy widow, is not so simple. The movie significantly relies on the quality of the acting - which does not disappoint. Overall the story is a bit on the average side - with indications of the final twist evident early - but well recommended for a quiet night in.
