Pleased so far
I primarily wanted a razor to do light shaving of my face and mostly my head since all the cartridge razors are a bit too aggressive and I had wanted hopefully an "in between" shave. This is the first time I've been able to do my head without nicks and cuts. I used the straight side with the lowest setting. The setting seems to affect its ability to open as wide as it can so it will open the most at the max setting. I didn't notice any looseness in the adjustment dial or the dial for the doors. It's heavy enough it feels like you can hurt someone with it and I love the heft and thickness and the slight length on the handle compared to the other razor that I have. I didn't do anything fancy, just a bit of conditioner and shaving cream on my head like I would do for any other kind of razor and have the slightest itch but no nicks at all or discomfort. My point of reference is using a safety razor a handful of times and have a short Van Der Hagen one which is light, thin, and even shorter than this. Not really the biggest fan plus chrome can be slick and its handle knobbing being too smooth made me look for something in the style of this one. The etched knurling on this handle feels great to me. I feel like I could get a good grip on it short of my hands being doused in oil. I coupled this with a Wilkinson sword blade for the first run as I am still getting a good feel for blades but if this holds up this has to be a good one. I also really really like the short length even as someone with relatively large hands it never felt like it was going to get away from me or that I would drop it even in awkward positions. It also did not get clogged up with hair or cream as bad as my other. If this holds up it is a fantastic piece. I also love the coloring and overall style of it, everything about it says quality in my eyes so far. I just wanted something that I could get a comfortable shave since sometimes even good razors can be very problematic on my skin and I don't need to go Krillin smooth but didn't want the typical electric stubble either and this seems to fit the bill perfectly. This one would be great for beginners but the price is the ONLY thing I think would be prohibitive but the flexibility of the adjustment is fantastic for beginners and as you get more confident or want to shave different parts differently it's a great pick so far. Edit: Astra's definitely still very much bite on the minimum setting if you aren't careful lol.

Great razor for someone switching over from cartridge razor.
I’ve been using cartridge razors since I started shaving as a teen. This is my first DE safety razor purchase and I couldn’t be happier. I did take the time to do some research before hand as I wanted to make sure I was making a good choice. One of my issues is my skin is rather sensitive and I have had been searching for a way to shave that wouldn’t leave my skin feeling I just took sand paper to it. Which has been a problem with cartridge razors. I figured my best bet was getting an adjustable razor coming out of the gate as I wanted to be able to adjust just how aggressive of a cut I wanted. I also wanted a razor with some heft to it. I stumbled upon Vikings Blade and figured The Emperor Series would meet my needs. I also purchased another manufacturer’s safety razor as an alternative. Here is what I can say about the Meiji. The Razor has a real heft to it. The build quality and quality of finish are very good. The butterfly opens and closes without any binding and works well mechanically. Blades fit well into the butterfly without issues. Once closed the blade does bend to conform to the shape of the butterfly. But this is as expected considering the design. Several other reviewers think this is a problem. Frankly it isn’t. The resulting shave of the Meiji was nothing short of spectacular. I got a smooth shave without any irritation or problems after shaving. It only took me 40 years to figure out that shaving with a safety razor, though old school was/is far superior to shaving with “shaving foam” and a cartridge razor. Conclusion, the Meiji is a great razor especially if you’re making your first DE safety razor purchase. And it is far, far superior (and painless I might add) in comparison to any cartridge razor. It is also better than other razor I purchased as an alternative.

Vikings Blade Meiji punches WELL above its class. GREAT first razor.
I've had the Vikings Blade Meiji for a couple years now, and let me cut to the chase. This is a perfect gateway drug to getting into wet shaving. You get SO MUCH value from Vikings Blade (in EVERYTHING they do), I have simply gotten to the point if Vikings Blade is selling, I must see what it is. If you are interested in the Meiji, it's because you intentionally want a heavy, short-handle, high quality, double-edge razor, and this delivers. The color scheme is different and interesting, and there are peculiarities to the razor which help you figure out what you like and what you don't. Do you like a flat guard or a closed comb? Well, you've got both options here. Do you prefer mild, or more aggressive? Again, you get a range of possibilities. Do you prefer a heavy razor or a lighter one? You'll definitely know. What I love about this razor. The heft. It's big and heavy in the hand. It's easy to "let the razor do the work." You need apply NO pressure when using the Meiji. The adjustability. Like many other adjustable razors like this one, you really need to open the doors a bit when you do the adjustment, then lock it back down. Otherwise, the adjustment ring goes loose. Crack the doors, adjust, then lock back down. I love butterfly razors, and this one has an excellent mechanism. It delivers an excellent shave. Period. What don't I love? The asymmetrical flat bar/closed comb sides end up being educational for the first few shaves, then I just wish both sides were closed comb and the thing was symmetric. You end up dialing in what you love, then the option becomes "that side of the razor I never use." It doesn't stand by itself. The rounded bottom is very nice, and the rattle end allows water to go through well. But if you want to keep this on your sink, you're either using a razor stand or it's sitting on its side. My 1959 Gillette Fatboy, on the other hand, stands just fine. I wish the whole thing were brass. Many razors, especially below $80, use a combination of metals because of price and practicality. This has parts made with Zamak (a.k.a. "pot metal"), which is a zinc alloy. It works really well, and the majority of modern razors have some parts made of it. But Zamak eventually corrodes. You will probably get several decades out of your Meiji, but I think it's safe to say nobody is going to be arguing over "dad's razor." To be fair, you're also not paying hundreds of dollars for all stainless steel or plated brass. If it was all brass, you wouldn't be hitting these price points. This is a great "gateway drug" for wet shaving because you are getting incredible value for a very reasonable price. This is the highest quality introduction to what DE shaving can be. I also think, if you are new to the hobby, this will not be your last razor. Not by a long shot. Because of the Meiji, I figured out I like the Gillette Fatboy (which definitely inspired this razor). But I wouldn't have looked at the Fatboy if the Meiji hadn't given me insight into what I think is important in a shave. The Meiji checks SO MANY important boxes, especially for those getting into wet shaving. I recommend it and all of Vikings Blade products without hesitation. Their razor stand and lather bowls are unparalleled. Their blades, well...did I mention their razors, stands and lather bowls? Seriously, blades are all personal choices and you'll figure out what you like with some experimentation. Still...whenever I see a new product from Vikings Blade, I usually end up looking for my wallet. They're that good.

Seriously A Great Quality Shaver
This is all my fault but I am not a fan. I am 61 years old. I tried and tried but not for me. It feels solid, great weight, great balance, easy to use for someone who can 😃 but not me. If you are good with a a safty razor then I highly recommend. If you have never used one make sure you decide quick so you can return it. I used it for 2 months and kept cutting myself. That was all my fault. I am just inept when it comes to using this. I even tried their best model for 2 months and my wife said enough is enough go back to your old razor. Im tired of watching blood oozing out of my face a breakfast. I kept them to long and waste over $100 dollars. They are to nice to throw away so I hoping to find someone who wants one and I can give him one of these.Again I am extreamly impressed with the quality and extremely disappointed that I could not use it properly

Great razor for "new" or "old" wet-shavers
I've been using my Vikings Blade Emperor "Meiji" for almost a year and absolutely love it. I also own the standard chrome VB Emperor which is a bit larger than the Meiji, but find myself using the Meiji as my daily driver. The Meiji feels beefy and substantial in my hand due to it's weight and yet it's very maneuverable given its short handle. It's a cinch to load and unload blades given the fact that it is a true adjustable (twist to open) and the mechanism works flawlessly. And perhaps most of all, it looks fantastic. The blend of colors combined with the distinctive red stripe make this razor stand apart from most other razors on the market. The fit and finish on my unit is near-perfect. (The red stripe around the base of the handle on my unit isn't completely aligned all the way around, and you can spot minor blemishes in the finish inside the doors if you look for them. However, for the price I think the Meiji is an excellent value.) I am not a razor collector and so am not bothered that neither the Meiji nor the regular Emperor are favored by those "in the know" among the wet-shaving community. I also realize there are many shavers who have a problem with VB brand's marketing practices, or with where their razors are (or aren't) manufactured. But to me as an admittedly newer wet shaver, what matters most is what kind of shave I can get from the razor. The Meiji gives me a close yet comfortable shave; I don't have to fret over avoiding cuts or razor burns; I can just concentrate on enjoying the shave. And it looks great. One of these days, I might be interested in acquiring another razor for a different feel (alternate head design) or perhaps for a bit more durability (e.g., stainless steel). But for now, I'm happy, and I'd recommend the VB Emperor Meiji to anyone looking for an affordable, fully adjustable razor that gives a great shave.

A great find!
A great razor. The perfect size, weight and balance. Much better than my multiblade razor and cartridges. Almost no ingrown hairs and next to no irritation. Just make sure to prep your skin before shaving. Moisturize your skin after shaving. I like the adjustable blade where you can make it more or less aggressive. A great product!

Very cool Razor - great for beginners/new to safety razors
This is a great entry-level razor, especially at the sub-$50 price point. Like most razors at this level, this one does a fine job and is made nicely. But, you MUST open it up and remove the blade after use so it can dry out. Many of these razors can rust out - even if they are anodized or coated like this one. Most people reading this are already into safety razors, so I'll try to describe this in relation to other products. It looks cool and I like the pseudo-Japanese design queues. The handle is textured and easy to grip - I never have to worry about dropping it in the shower. It's a butterfly, so that's a thing if it matters to you. I've owned several adjustables and this one does well, again - great for someone getting into this at such a price point. I started at a 1 and worked my way up. By 3 with a Derby blade, it didn't really perform as well as I like. But that's just my personal experience - everybody's different. Being an adjustable, this is a great razor for new people to experiment with aggression and see what they like best. I think it's great as a gift for your kids first razor or a novelty for a husband. If you already own a few adjustables - you know exactly what you're getting. Past that, it's all personal preference. Again, at sub-$50 you can't go wrong with what you get here.

Looks cool…
Looks cool but that’s about it. The weight is good to I guess, but that’s the only good things I have to say about it. I tried to get it to show in the photos but not sure it transferred but the blade will not sit level no matter what I do. The doors don’t open evenly, they are kinda janky. Don’t drop it with the doors open, it feels like they will pop off easily. Also there is something rattling if you shake it. All that said, it is a beautiful razor! It’s a shame the build quality is so terrible. Three stars because of the heft and because it’s the best looking razor I have owned.

Smooth and luxuriant shave
This is an extraordinary razor, give it a try, you will not be disappointed. I purchased this from Amazon.com.au after much hesitation caused by some very negative reviews here. I encountered none of the issues they complained of, and am so glad I took the chance. It seems to me, one has only to read the instructions (clearly printed on the beautiful presentation box), and none of the alleged problems arise. This is dual head DE razor with a butterfly closure and adjustable aggression settings (1-10). Form and finishing are superb (as is the exquisite packaging) - it is delight to look at and to hold. Although considerably shorter than my Merkur Future razor, the weight of the Meiji has real heft and presence. Build quality is also superb- if, as I do, you like the aesthetic, it is practically a piece of shaving art. I paired this with a Derby extra blade, and Mitchell's wool fat soap. This was a delight to use right out of the box. The perfect angle was easy to find, control was very certain with the heavily knurled handle. The result was a BBS shave in two passes. No slips, no cuts, easy glide and it cuts so very smoothly. The design and dual heads (i.e. closed flat bar on one side and open comb on the other) meant I was able to crank up the aggression setting to 5. By comparison, I never take my Merkur past 2. This is a razor that is likely to let you find your own sweet spot, whether a beginner or experienced DE user, would make a very fine gift, and is probably the equal of far more expensive alternatives. My Merkur may remain my everyday go to, but this was a treat to use. Very highly recommended.
