4 months use, can properly review now
My cat is a picky man, he’s been used to the same litter & food that we can never stray away from the brands he likes. I hate cleaning the litter box multiple times a day for his liking, he will force me to follow him to the litter box to clean it for it before he uses it. It was exhausting. The reviews I read before purchasing complained about not being able to use regular clumping litter & that it still leaves litter out of the box & needing to sweep it up all the time. That’s honestly life with a cat so if you’re complaining about that, I’d say get those cat litter mats. There’s no solution to that problem. Now, the litter is more expensive but it’s worth it. The compartment that stores that waste isn’t big enough to store clumping litter accumulated over long periods. I started using my regular clumping litter at first without any of the litter that’s for this specific litter box, knowing my cat was not going to touch it if it didn’t smell/feel like the litter he’s used to. I did that for about a month until I was done having to clean out the waste compartment every couple days. It would get so full that the smell would start to escape from it. I didn’t like that, obviously. So my second month I started to mix the clumping litter my cat is used to with the litter that goes with it. I kept adding more & more litter that goes with the machine until I stopped using the clumping litter altogether. My cat got used to it this way & this litter is much easier to work with. It absorbs urine much much better, there is literally no smell at all, & it doesn’t really stick to his poops so you aren’t loosing litter when it gets sifted into the waste compartment. So yes, it’s more expensive but it does last a longer time! The machine is easy to set up. I put a cat litter mat underneath it to catch the litter that falls around it, there is some that needs to be swept up but an easy fix (sweep it up). My cat came around to loving it more than the other litter box with his regular favorite clumping litter. I’ve finally been able to tuck that one away. If cleaning litter box multiple times a day is a chore to you (it was for me), definitely get this! There’s still maintenance; switching it out every couple months, sweeping litter up daily, etc, but you don’t need to sift the litter 🤷🏻♀️ it’s a win for me.

Bought one… ended up with three
I ended up getting three of these, which probably says everything right there. Yes, the refill trays aren’t going to compete with budget litter on price, but that’s not really the point of this system. You’re paying for convenience and a better-smelling home, and in my experience, it absolutely delivers on both. Not having to scoop every day has been a huge quality-of-life upgrade. I just swap out the trays when needed and that’s it. The odor control is honestly one of the biggest wins. Even with multiple boxes, the house stays noticeably fresher compared to when I was using traditional litter. The units themselves are simple and reliable. The rake cycle is quiet enough that it doesn’t bother anyone, and my cats adjusted to them quickly without any issues. I was a little unsure about switching to crystal litter at first, but it’s been great. Way less dust and tracking than what I was using before. Overall, this has made litter box maintenance so much easier. Definitely worth it if you value convenience and keeping your home smelling clean.

Works great, trays don’t last 20-30 days though.
First off, this is an amazing litter box. So, so many advantages. I live in an apartment with an open floor plan, so there’s no place to tuck a litter box to keep the smell confined like a basement in a house. This box completely neutralizes the smell and there is none, unless my cat drops a nasty deuce. Only reason is the box waits 20 mins after the cat leaves to clean itself. This is necessary however so the poop has a chance to solidify and not become a gooey mess on the rake. But it works awesome. My cat came from a shelter so I was a little worried he might not know to use it since there is no conventional litter that he would recognize the smell. However, he knew immediately and has had zero issues. The little rake pushes the poop into a clamshell area of the box. The clamshell opens when the poop is pushed into it and closes as soon as the rake moves out of it. This keeps the stank in. This is where my only gripe comes in: the litter refill only lasts about 10 days because the clamshell gets full and won’t close all the way, which lets the poop smell out. Now, I could clean the poop out of it and get more life from the refill but that defeats the purpose of not having to deal with cleaning the cat box. I only have one cat, so the 20-30 day life expectancy is about half. There are reusable trays and litter refills but again, defeats the purpose of not having to clean it. Otherwise I love this box and the system works really well! Totally sold on it.

Awesome
This is an amazing litter box. I love the automatic scooper, and I love that it is very much like a regular litter box, so transition over to this one was very easy. I did not want the litter box that turned around, simply because I did not want that large bulky thing in my house. The trays are easy to change. I would suggest getting a reuseable tray and refill with the same litter. Very easy to clean and keeps the smell down. It's a bit pricey, but look for a sale and you will not regret it. The change for me was totally worth the added up front expense.

Not worth purchasing
I've tried to chat with customer service for questions about this litter box, but I keep getting sent to an invalid page. Positives: I was happy to pay the lower price for this self cleaning litter box. It was easy to put together and simple enough to see how it works. Problem 1: keeps getting jammed because the rake can't finish cleaning. The plastic trap door, that is supposed to lift up and allow the rake to push the waste into the collection bin, keeps falling off and this stops the rake. I have to keep resetting the door to get the rake to move. This has happened when it's been newly cleaned, and of course when it's been used. The lid gets smeared with waste, so it has to be cleaned. The waste that doesn't go into the bin gets stuck on the wrong side of the box. So now, I have to pick all of that out to dispose of (I do use disposable gloves). Unfortunately, this happens at least once a day. Problem 2: I chose to get the stainless steel tray, after trying the disposable one that came with it. I was hoping this would reduce the cost of using this specific litter box. Plus, I have 4 cats so I have to clean the waste bin regularly, and the disposable ones are too expensive for me. I kept the other "old fashioned" box in use because I've always used at least 2 boxes. However, because the bin on this new one is too narrow to fit a scoop, I have to use disposable gloves to remove the waste. Overall, this hasn't saved me from having to remove the waste less often, but in fact much more often. I have to use gloves to fix it, clean it, etc., which I didn't have to do with the old box. There are several design improvements that need to be made to improve the function of this box. Suggestions: Make the plastic bin cover more secure when seated. Have the rake lift slightly higher to keep it from getting stopped by the bin cover. Make the receptacle deeper AND wider to get a scoop in it. OR, make the bin removable so it can be emptied easily. I will definitely know what to look for should I buy another "self cleaning" litter box. Update: As of today, June 25, 2025, I've not been contacted by the vendor, manufacturers, or Amazon. I'm disappointed that they have no resolution to the issues I described. The issues I've reported continue, and now there's a new one. The cover to the waste bin, keeps coming off, and some of the waste falls to the floor. There's no way I can secure it, as that would restrict it from being able to lift. My adult daughter, who helps me with clear he litter boxes, has.ended up just carrying the bottom tray out to dispose of the waste. So, that means I have to use more litter than the old fashioned box. Please note before you buy this, THERE IS NO REFUND OR OFFER TO REPLACE. THERE IS NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THE LINK PROVIDED.

Works as expected
Edit: 11/26/2024, product is still working with no issues. Recently Purchased Pet info: Indoor Kitten: 13 weeks old Rescued: 2 weeks ago (at 11 weeks) Other pets: 2 dogs (1 pit bull and 1 puggle) Diet: Dry Diet/Free to eat whenever: Nature's Variety® Instinct® Original Kitten Food - Natural, Grain Free, Chicken Wet Diet/One can a day: Nulo MedalSeries All Life Stages Wet Cat Food (flavor varies) Note: I used a detailed Reddit post about what to feed my kitten. I used the recommendation of the shelter on how often to feed my kitten. Product age: 1 week Cover type: uncovered Product Review: Overall, the product works great. Have not had to touch the product since in use. Based on the meter, as of this morning, she has used (or has been in) it 41 times since start (kittens tend to go more often than cats). Literally no smell of urine. However, the poop smell can be a lot. Do not stop reading here, we were transitioning our kitten’s diet from the shelter food, to what is listed above and now that she’s settled, the poop smell has gone away (inviting a honest friend over to give us the home smell test). The product advises not to use plugged in until your cat is 6 months old. Reading into it, it seems that all automatic/self-cleaning cat litter boxes have the same advisory because of the cats weight (may not register) or because they will try to play with it while it’s doing is cleaning cycle. Despite the advisory, I’m very much into instant gratification and plugged it in immediately. Fortunately, I work from home and have time to monitor kitty’s behavior. When the machine starts running, she does run to it to watch, but she’s never tried to play with it. Keep in mind, we have had our kitten for 2 weeks now. She used a regular litter box for a week while with us. When I made the switch to this product, I removed the old litter box completely from the household. I did not put any of her used litter in this product. However, I did sprinkle (literally a dash of) fresh litter that was used in her old litter box to mix with the crystals for this product. The original litter that we purchased advertised kitten attraction to get them familiar where to go. I placed this product where her original litter box was. I’m not sure how people know if their cats love their litter box, but I guess if they use it that means they love it? Anyway, she began using it immediately. We have had no accidents. Other review concerns commentary: Poop sticking to the rake: had one experience with it, it was not terrible, and after it cycled a couple times it had fallen off the rake. Also, it was during good transition. Leaking litter tray: have not checked, a little scared to check. However, I would be surprised if it got through the tray and the lid to get to the floor. The disposable tray fits into the lid. Once it’s time dispose, you remove the lid from the tray and place it on top. Odor control: Literally no pee smell. Poop smell during food transition. Honest friend home smell test to come. My friend does not have a cat. Expensive: Yes. Expected, yes. It is not unusual when one buys things like this, they are going to have to fork out some money to maintain it. Someone buys a luxury car, they pay extra for maintenance. Faulting the product over how much it costs and how much the tray replacements is not fair in my opinion. Edit: Passed friend test. Still works great. Tray did not leak. I’ve replaced the tray at about 75 uses. Edit: 10/21/2022 Still love this product. I’ve opted to buy the drop in top to keep the dogs away. Now that my cat is a little older, it is about a month of use before replacing. If people are having issues it is probably because they are not using it as intended or they feed their cats a poor diet.

Only buy it new from PetSafe
This is an awesome product & my cat not only loves it, but worships it! Unfortunately the one I got from Amazon, does not work, the rake never moved. It was easy to set up straight from the box. If new and functional it's very quiet, not much space needed, needs a two prong electric outlet, empty for one cat about every 14-21 days. Advertised as box only damage & discounted. It should have been tested by Amazon before resale as a return.

5 years on and it’s still working
My 2 cats have been using this since May 2021 and only now is the motor for the rake starting to slow down. It still works but just takes a while to push the dirty litter in the tray. I’ll definitely buy another one as soon as this one finally stops working, it’s actually priced less expensive than it was 5 years ago. My cats took to it with no problems at all, they came from standard clay litter and never seemed to have an issue with the crystals. It’s just so nice to not have to clean the box daily, the smells go away fast, and it’s such a basic machine there’s not much to go wrong. I also like that it keeps the experience similar to what my cats had already been accustomed to. Unfortunately the litter refills have almost doubled in price over the years, but I feel it’s still worth it.

The most useless high value purchase of my life
Honest review after 5 months of usage. Absolute garbage product. Your workload increases 10 times. 1. You still have to scrape. 2. In addition you need to clean the box as well and the grills (ewwww). Choice is yours if you want to pay for more work!
