.com Long before Lee Roy Parnell copped Delbert McClinton for mainstream country, and Ronnie Dunn challenged Vince Gill for soulful-country-ballad supremacy, Ronnie Milsap brought sanitized R&B to Nashville. But as a full-rounded performer, Milsap also knew his way around deep-dish country, rock & roll, and middle-of-the-road smoothies, all of which he integrated into an enormously popular, piano-based country-pop style that earned him 40 chart-topping singles, six Grammys, and eight CMA awards in the '70s and '80s. Drawing on such topflight songwriters as Mike Reid, Burt Bacharach, Kris Kristofferson, and Bob McDill, Milsap built a repertoire that ranged from sunny lopers ("Pure Love") to emotional meltdowns ("Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends") and classic Nashville Sound ("I'd Be a Legend in My Time"), growing more adventurous with the envelope-pushing "Stranger in My House" that brought much-needed tension to an often flaccid genre. By the time his reign ended in the '90s, he could take credit for helping shove country beyond its rural roots, but he'd also lost his edge with songs that dwelled on nostalgia ("Lost in the Fifties Tonight"). This two-CD collection covers the best of it and adds two new cuts, the engaging, Delbert McClinton-like "Livin' on Love" and the largely forgettable "Time, Love, and Money." Can Milsap make a comeback? To quote a song title here, "Stranger Things Have Happened." But not likely. --Alanna Nash

40 #1s + 1 Other Hit + 2 Bonuses=43 Total Tracks
Ronnie Milsap, as you know, has 40 #1 hits, 35 on Billboard. This compilation, released in 2000, features all of them, and slides through 4 different Milsap periods. The 1st features "Pure Love" (his 1st #1), "Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends" (his 1st Grammy win), and "(I'm a) Stand By My Woman Man" (another Grammy winner). Ronnie was never pure country, and the closest he ever came was in this period. Then came 2nd period, beginning in 1977, when he began creating a different sound later known as country-pop. "It Was Almost Like A Song," which began this innovation, was THE BIG hit, #1 for 3 weeks, #16 on pop, and #7 on Easy Listening (now Adult Contemporary). Other highlights: "What A Difference You've Made In My Life" (a cover of the song by Amy Grant), "Let's Take A Long Way Around The World" (w/ an American-beat flavor added), "Nobody Likes Sad Songs" (including a harp), and "Smoky Mountain Rain" (Pop Top 20, according to the linar notes, and #1 AC; it's now an official state song of Tennessee). #3 is the crossover period. He successfully created the aforementioned musical style, which is versatile itself, with the big jewel "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me" (Pop #5, AC #2, Grammy winner), "I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World" (Pop #20, AC #3), the country-flavored adult contemporary "Any Day Now" (#1 AC song of 1982, Pop Top 15), disco/pop influnced "He Got You", the mellow "Inside", hard-rock-flavored haunter "Stranger In My House" (at #5, the non-#1, pop top 20 as said by liner notes, AC #8, and nominated for Best C&W Vocal Performance, Male), soft-rocker "Don't You Know How Much I Love You," and doo-wop-like Grammy winner, "Lost In The Fifties Tonight." 4th period is similar, but with less crossover, and features the Grammy-winning duet with Kenny Rogers, "Make No Mistake, She's Mine," AC #42. The #1s run all the way to "Since I Don't Have You" (1991), another doo-wop inspiration. (It was, in fact, a cover of a 50s hit.) This also has 2 then-new songs, both up-tempo. "Livin' On Love," according to Milsap, 'has that little bit of R&B feel that I've always loved so much.' "Time, Love, And Money" was released, but only went #57 on the country charts. 40 #1 Hits, however, went gold in 2003. I had a skipping problem with "Any Day Now" after receiving a copy, since we couldn't avoid buying it used, but I have 2 other CDs w/ it, and the rest of the compilation doesn't have this problem. Overall, great, and thanks to the merchant!

If you are a Ronnie Milsap fan, you must buy 40 #1 Hits
I have only known who Ronnie Milsap is for about 2 years now. Once I heard Smokey Mountain Rain (saw the Branson, MS Video) and Stranger in My House (Video) andAny Day Now (Video), I was hooked. From then on I started looking for his musiceverywhere. I love all of his music, starting from when he was really young, to theolder Ronnie. What is great about 40 #1 Hits is that you really get a lot for yourmoney. I believe I may have even bought a used CD and it plays perfectly. I havecollected some other CD's and Cassettes from Amazon, but this has been the bestbecause so many of his songs are on there, his 40 #1 Hits. So, if you are a great fan of "Mr. Ronnie," this CD is for you. You will not feel that you wasted your money. Even if there is a song on it that you have on another CD, there are so many renditions of his songs, like the video "Stranger in my House," you may be getting Stranger in my House from another performance. They are all great. I have listened to it over and over, as I do all his music because there is something about Ronnie that just makes you want him to include him in your life, whatever you are going through. Since Christmas is around the corner, it would make a great gift also.

Best comp. of Milsap
Doing research I found this to be the most complete and quality sounding compilation of Ronie Milsap's music. The seller went above and beyond to get it to me before Christmas... Thank You. I give them five stars too. Although the condition of the 2 CD set was listed as "very good" they told me that it was in need of cleaning but was good condition... Once I got it the CDs look like new. A slight bend in the CD lable behind the rear cover in spine... was the only flaw.
