I got this Model Dremel to replace an older-version that didn't have replacement parts available anymore. I actually only have a Dremel because I have a 200# Mastiff and 120# Rottie and I've had excellent success using it for their nail management. For the probably very few who will be looking to use this tool for that specific use, I think it's an excellent choice. If you haven't ever used a Dremel for that specific use before and/or if you're using on a smaller breed dog, I'd recommend going with one of the models that doesn't have quite as much power. Using a Dremel on dog nails is a skill that takes time to learn, for both human and canine. Putting too much pressure on or touching the tool to the nail for too long can easily burn your dog. Their nails heat up very quickly when using a Dremel to trim them. Short bursts with very careful attention to the temperature of the nail is the only way this can be done. Once the length has been reduced with the Dremel, use the same short bursts to smooth the bottom and sides of the nail (one of the biggest reasons I switched from manual clippers) so there are no splits in the nail that would cause further stress or damage to the nail. My dogs are constantly being rewarded with treats and praise during this process and have gotten so used to it, they hand me their paws and look forward to their sessions. So, if you're one of the unique ones like me who only needs this Dremel to do her dog's nails, in my opinion, this is an excellent product to use. The amount of power provided is perfect and easily adjustable with only needing to place the tool at the medium strength level for trimming even the biggest of nails. There are plenty of replacement heads provided which are easy to remove and replace. The usable time of the battery is excellent and I have found no decrease in power when the battery loses it's charge. Instead it just won't work, which is fine with me. There are only two things about this Dremel that I am not crazy about, but won't change my number of starts for the review: 1) I have very small hands and this is not a tiny tool. The previous dremel I had, which was a 10-Volt which they no longer make, fit much more easily and comfortably into my hand. This one is a little clunky, but I'm learning to use it. I don't know that it would be great for super detailed work. 2) It runs warmer than I expected it to. It's not anything that makes using it uncomfortable, but was a little surprising. All-in-all though, I'm very happy and love my Dremel and would absolutely recommend and buy again.

I had a corded Dremel before this one and not having a cord dragging around while you work is such a huge quality of life improvement I can't go back. This thing has way more power than I expected from a battery tool and it charges back up surprisingly fast too. Been using it for cutting, sanding, and detail work on projects and it handles everything I throw at it without any issues.

I bought this 8220 dremel after buying the 8050 for trimming our dog's nails but wanted a more powerful dremel for other projects around the home. I knew I wanted a cordless dremel, and opted for the 12 volt 8220. My first impression was it is quite a bit bigger and heavier than the 8050. Once I charged the battery and turned it on, I knew it was a beast! I used it to cut off some hard plastic toilet valves (and replaced with SharkBite compression valves) and it cut through them with no problem. I was very impressed with the power and features of this dremel. I am just thinking of all the things I can do around the house now that I have this! Some pros of this model: 1. Cordless power! 2. 12 volt separate battery and charger incase you want to have additional batteries. It is a quick charging battery taking about 1 hour 3. Separate power and variable speed switch. Variable from 5-30k. 4. EZ twist collet lock (no need to carry around wrench) 5. Takes all of the dremel attachments unlike some of the smaller models 6. Handy case that stores the 8220 and many more accessories Overall, I plan to use this dremel a lot for things around the house. I have attached a picture of the 8220 next to my 8050 micro for a size comparison. This was the same price as the smaller model. If you have any thoughts on using the dremel for more than very light usage, I recommend going with the larger model.

I was contemplating buying the 7700 (7.2V), 8000 (10.8V) or 8200 (12V). My main reason for buying was to "dremel" my dog's nails but I also wanted the flexibility to use on various household projects. My biggest concern with cordless devices is the battery, stay away from NiCad or NiMH if you can. I've had other brands of rotary tools with those old batteries and while the tool works fine for the first couple of months, the battery quickly degrades - device loses torque without ramping up the RPM which can cause lots of heat transfer. The new Lithium battery holds a charge much longer even if the device is not being used, can top off anytime as well - notice how all new cellphones are switching to Lithium? The new 8220 has the newest Lithium battery so I'm hoping it will last longer than the 8200 which has mixed reviews on the battery. For me, the price difference between the 7700, 8000 vs 8200 was justifiable because a replacement battery quickly makes up the price difference. I dremel once a week or two - even at that rate the old NiCad and NiMH were not holding charge very well. The 8220 definitely is plasticky. This should be fine for home hobby use but definitely not professional grade - that is don't expect it to last long if you drop it on concrete. I'm happy with the build quality and the use of plastic because for the work I'm doing I don't want a device that's too heavy and unwieldy. The plastic box doesn't leave room to store any other accessories. The included accessories are a small sample of what Dremel makes - incidentally while there are lots of 3rd party manufacturers of Dremel accessories, I've found Dremel branded material to be higher quality. The 8220 is fairly quiet even when notched up to 30,000 RPM. I'm mainly using 5,000-10,000 RPM on my dog and it's much quieter than other rotary tools I've had in the past. Update 2013/03: I'm still very glad I purchased this model. The battery is amazing and has no problem holding charge despite weekly use. Would not hesitate to get another one.

Iam rather concerned that the battery was fully charged and had no use since xmas and lost its charge when I was going to use it today January 9. I will update my review after using the tool for a while. Right now I am wondering about the battery. It would be a shame to return unit for a battery. I am still wary of the battery but I have been using it steadily everyday now since this review and the battery is going down but it is better performance than I expected. At any rate I am using the rotary tool building model ships and I am very happy with it. I do not think I could do the model without it. I am using it to drill tiny holes around 1mm. I guess I have been using the tool for about a week. I leave it run while I am positioning parts for the ship i am building. As a wild guess it ran a total time of about 3 hours. I let it charge for about 40 minutes and went back to work. It showed 3 lights but the light had not stopped blinking on the charger. For my application I have no problem. I guess I will charge it every three days or so. I would add that the extra collets I bought for 1mm drilling work excellent. I have not broken a drill yet. And there seems to be very little wobble.

My advice, don't waste $10, $20, $40 or even $60 on a cheap nail grinder for your dog. Buy quality once. What I thought was a commercial grinder started to fail and I decided to go with something that would clearly last a very long time. This tool is amazing. It's so much quieter and more powerful than my last unit. The dogs and I are so much happier! This cordless unit makes it very easy to maneuver around the nail and grind very carefully. I've never used a nail guard as seen on some units, and I don't want to. Now that I'm learning to use the exposed wheel, it's so much better for all. I don't just grind the nail in a flat plane, I smooth all around it. Initially, I started with a coarse sand-paper drum like I used on my old grinder. Fortunately, I tested it on my big dog because it was super aggressive and I had to be really careful. I switched to the finest grade (I think) and at a relatively low (and quiet!) speed, it ground with a great balance of speed and control. I was able to get right to the quicks without a spot of blood. (I have a fair amount of experience. Take your time. ;)

This was worth every penny! It grinds my mini-doxie's nails so smoothly; like butter. Everything about it is awesome. It charges lightening fast, the variable speeds are very useful, and it has enough power to make the "ordeal" smoother than ever! (coming from PediPaws where you can physically see it slow down as you press on the nail) My only critique (am almost wanting to take a star off, but it's more on Dremel than it is on the actual product) is that this can only rotate in one direction. At least with PediPaws they were intuitive enough that you can hold it with your right hand while it rotates towards me (away from dog). Right now, what I have to do is hold the tool in my right hand, but the grinding head NOT inside (towards the left) but held on the outside (towards the right). So it feels a bit awkward doing the grinding on the outside of my arms AWAY from my body rather than the usual manner (in 99% [I imagine] of power-tool work); within my two arms TOWARDS my body. I acknowledge that this tool is not primarily for nail-grindings, but to have it possible to change directions (and therefore right or left hands) would still be desired... In any case, this was definitely worth getting!

Handy, being cordless. Haven't faced low power issues with the battery. Must add that I have not yet used it for heavy grinding job. The absence of EZ change mandrel and a it's compatible accessories was a downer. However, all the accessories of previous corded Dremel rotary tool can be used on this. That is a big relief. The charging of battery has to be done on 110 volts so a voltage converter is a must.
