The Ultimate Guide to Modern Calligraphy & Hand Lettering for Beginners

Finally found a book that has directions and information related to hand lettering, types of pens and various types of different hand lettering. There are tracing pages, practice pages AND pages that guide you on how to form words by connecting the letters. I’m very excited to use this book!

This book has been a huge help in relearning casual calligraphy. It's a great place to start for those wanting to get into calligraphy without diving directly into the deep and if the hobby.

Very well written and well organized. Easy to follow directions. Beautiful examples. I chose this based on reviews and price point. I am pleased I chose it over a spiral bound book which I was considering (with a $25 price and maybe double content). Reading the artist’s “about” also made me feel good about my choice. The book is perfect for a beginner. I would go with five stars, but there is one negative for me. I was hoping for a book I could actually practice in. However, my pens bleed through the pages. If the practice pages were blank on the back side, it would be perfect.

This book is perfect for anyone starting modern calligraphy. The instructions are clear, the examples are easy to follow, and the tips really help improve technique. A great resource for beginners looking to learn hand lettering!

I love writing and I wanted to explore some ways to spice up birthday cards , letters, and signs around the house. This book is perfect for that, It goes over technique, the different strokes to use, and teaches two completely different styles in both upper and lower case. I love how much space there is for practicing every single letter. There are several practice pages for lower and upper case in two complete styles:: Basic Brush Alphabet and Basic Monoline Alphabet. Then, there are several practice pages for common word in both styless. Lots of pages to practice and write. There is a lot more to do to get started right away. There is also a great overview of connections for connecting the letters of different styles, and examples of the serif alphabet (upper and lower case) and san serif alphabet (upper and lower case). There are practice pages for a variety of "Flourishes and Swashes" , wreaths, doodles, and then it illustrates how to compose all the elements together using variations, mixing and matching, and designing. Every section has a place for you to practice yourself. The different styles, the number of practicing pages, and the design section make this an incredible book for starters. I am so glad I purchased it! It is more hands on and "putting the pen to paper" practice sheets than other books similar to it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Love this book to help with calligraphy. It has step by step as well as the angle you are to hold the pen. I used to do it but this book will help me get back to it.

Good practice pages but VERY thin paper. A basic Tombow soft brush pen bleeds through. The bleed through makes it hard to see the practice stroke diagrams on the other side.
