Do you have to loosen the clamp to swivel the tray?

No. It remains tight and will still swivel the pad. It’s a very smooth glide also, not loose or choppy. I use the feature a lot as I am always sitting/standing in diff positions. I highly recommend!

The non-slip mat has partially detached. how would i go about reattaching it? what kind of glue would i need?

I haven’t had that problem yet but I did notice one end is starting to pull up.

Is the mouse pad firm enough to write on? Or would the pen poke through the paper and into the mouse pad?

I don't think it would work too well to write on, and I do think the pencil would poke through the paper. But it does work well for its intended use as mouse pad.

How big is the space from the side where the clamp hits the desk to the opening? Not how wide it opens, but how far onto the desk it goes?

A shade under 2 inches. Puts my keyboard right where I want it.
