Can this work on a desk top? And can you swap back and forth to and from a regular mouse?

Hi, this trackpad is designed for Windows. As long your computer is supports human interface devices (HID) and has a free USB port the trackpad should work. Yes, you should be able to switch between a mouse and the trackpad if both are connected to your device. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Perixx Support
