The Attributes of God Volume 1 with Study Guide: A Journey Into the Father's Heart

GOD : HE IS greater than you know
A Tozer classic created from a compilation of sermons gathered from tapes recorded in Tozer's church, Southside Alliance in Chicago. The "Attributes" is skillfully presented by David Fessenden in a form fitting of Tozer, capturing both the cantor and practical theology of Tozer. Fessenden includes a practical study guide for each attribute which coincides with each chapter. The study guide adds to the personal utility of a subject that is very elusive due to God's immensity. Fessenden enables the reader to stop and ponder , in group or singularly, the implications of seeing God as He is and letting Him be the "great I AM" attribute by attribute.Volume 1 of "the Attributes of God" does not include an introduction which is included in volume 2. This is unfortunate for readers not familiar with Tozer who could benefit from Tozer's explanation of his impetuous to write and preach. Tozer explains in the introduction of Volume 2 the dilemma of the church in reducing God to a barely elevated, if not equal, plane as man. He explains how this limited concept interferes with worship and awe of the Creator. He describes the danger of this thinking both for the individual and for the Church as the Body of Christ. Tozer states "We put our spiritual life on a budget". His description of the skewed version of God prepares the reader to enter into a heavenly definition which he presents as the attributes of the "I AM".Without introduction, Volume 1, propels the reader into the first of ten attributes, Infinitude. Immensity, Goodness, Justice, Mercy, Grace, Omnipresence, Immanence, Holiness and Perfection follow. Suprisingly, Tozer introduces the reader to mystics such as Julian of Norwich . The references seem less unexpected as the reader is propelled heavenward to glimpse each attribute. As each attribute shines a piece of God's fullness, the reader is set in awe at heart. The discovery of the Creator's height and breadth and depth will have the reader identify more with the Christian mystic who merely bends in awe of the Creator. This book will pull the non-Christian into a humble stance before a holy God. However, it mainly should be read by the every believing Christian. It should be used as refreshment for the dry and faithless and a conditioning work for the settled and fat. It is remarkably powerful for both.

Excellent, excellent, excellent!
What more can I say. I have found so much in these books that leave me amazed, that make me raise my hands and worship God. The information draws me nearer to God, fleshes out the picture of God in my heart. I can speak more confidently about Him and to Him. I have always suspected that there was something wrong with the popular picture of a super nice God, who is all-forgiving and who has a sugary-sweet loving nature. These books have given me a biblically-balanced view of God. He is so much more than the popular version. I find myself in awe of Him even with a tinge of fear (not the scary type) but one of "He truly is GOD!"Now that I am starting to understand His attributes, I begin to see how wonderful our salvation really is, why the work on the cross is so significant and why everyone MUST bow their knees and call Him Lord.I sincerely believe that these books are a MUST READ for every Christian. I mean, how else are you going to follow Him, if you have no idea Who He is and what He is truly like?If they can rate these books 10 stars, I will do so.A.W Tozer is with our Lord even now, and as he lives in glory with the Lord that He has written so much about, he probably realises that these books he wrote, however excellent and true, are but shadows and the foothills of Who are Lord really is.I thank God that these books are available.

One of the best religious books I have ever read!
A friend of mine suggested this book after her women's group read it together as a study guide on God's attributes. I had read several books on the attributes of God and have studied the topic as well, so I was reluctant to read another book on the topic. But, I got the book solely on my friend's recommendation, because I value her opinion. I must say I am very glad I did. First off, Tozer is a very gifted writer. He writes about very thought provoking topics, yet does so in understanding ways. He is extremely insightful and brought up some things I have never thought about. Plus, he answered some questions I have had for decades. The book is about more than common ideas and concepts on the attributes of God. You know the basics - God is all knowing, omnipresent, omnipowerful. Tozer goes way beyond that. And, rightly so. One insightful thing Tozer mentioned was that a society will never rise above its concept of God. I had never thought about that, but once stated it makes perfect sense. The book is full of such jewels.I can't say enough good things about Tozer. Since finding him I have shared other of his books with friends and they are impressed as well. It is said that Tozer has on his tombstone simply "A Man of God". No truer words were ever written.Get this book, you won't be sorry!

God is so Holy
A good dip, just beneath the surface, into the attributes of God."The Holy Spirit wrote 150 psalms and in those psalms He celebrates the wonders of God’s creation.""Did you ever stop to think that God is going to be as pleased to have you with Him in Heaven as you are to be there?""He and I in that bright glory, One deep joy shall share. Mine to be forever with Him, And His that I am there.""What God made, God loves, because it's inconceivable that God should make anything that He didn't love.""Love casts out fear, for when we know we are loved, we are not afraid. Whoever has God's perfect love, fear is gone out of the universe for him."

More devotional than academic but easy to read and holds your attention
Helpful for supplemental reading if studying the attributes of God. The material is basically a transcript of Tozer's sermons on the subject. Interesting and have some helpful pointers, but more sermonic than academic. Enjoyable read with some good insights. Adds nothing new to the study of the attributes of God and I would not recommend as one's first study source on the subject. Easy to read and probably beneficial on a devotional level. I say the same thing for volume 2.

amazing read
If you are serious about your faith in God, if you really desire to know God and what He is like at a deeper level [though not overwhelming in theological verbiage,] Tozer will certainly challenge you. [Though I suspect that it is the Holy Spirit] I found myself finishing a chapter then going back to read it again, and again. As I did and highlighted sentences, it seemed the entire chapter was illuminated. But only if you are serious.

Best book about God!
A W Tozer is a theologian legend. His writing is so easy and straight forward that you forget the word around you and feel the embrace of God as you devour this book. No one beats A W Tozer!

Challenging and humbling
Reset my all too small views of Father to realise I can never quantify in my limited human terms what I'll not be able to know in this life but can hold on to the promise of seeing Him in heaven to come in the next.
