Question 1

This one has 3" adaptor/gasket, with printed diagram; like woeful manual, NO detail. What direction does the adaptor face — inside fins point where?

I put a pvc pipe on the adaptor to discharge filtered water into my pond. It's not a good system, not a solid connection, I stacked rocks around the pvc pipe to protect the joint,....so some "critter" doesn't run over it and knock it loose. I don't understand your question on the fins, re-word please? The discharge could have been designed better but overall the filter does do the job and cleaning the filters every so often isn't that bad a chore.

Question 2

Would this filter work on a pond size of 2000 gal with fish?

Eileen, as a professional pond installer i have never actually installed one of these, we use higher end more expensive equipment so i don't have first hand experience with this filter... but i sell LOTS of them.  They seem very popular.  As long as you can place it above the water level of your pond it seems to be great.  The manufacturer's literature says that you can use it for Ponds up to 5,000 Gallons if there are NO FISH, for ponds up to 2,500 gallons if there are SMALL FISH and for ponds up to 1,250 Gallons if there are Koi. Question 3

For the Biosmart 5000, what is the size of the outlet port going back to the pond without using any adapter?  Is it 2 1/2" or 3".

Coming directly out of the box the outlet is 2.5".   This is a very difficult size to find but there is included with the filter an adapter that will bring it up to 3" and common and available size.   Thank you.

Can i use a 3100ghp for this

Thanks for your question. The maximum flow rate for this filter is 2700 GPH. However, remember that flow rate from submersible pumps diminishes with height and distance. So if the filter is pretty far away from the pump you shouldn't have any issue. You can also buy an in line ball valve to manually slow down the pump flow a little.
