Medical Coding Book for the Beginner
I purchased the Step By Step Medical Coding 2016 Edition textbook and workbook combination (see picture #1) for a medical billing and coding class that I enrolled in recently. This is the text and workbook required for the course. I have completed chapters one and two in the text and answered most of the corresponding questions in the workbook. The text is worded clearly and fairly easy to comprehend, which is a bonus since the concept is totally new to me (See picture #2 for an example of the text. The pink highlights are mine). However, I did find the workbook did not follow the exact sequence of the text. Since this is a revised edition, I wonder if the previous edition's order of questions aligned with the text and the author didn't realign the 2016 workbook with the revisions she made in the 2016 textbook. The answers were there but not sequential. The workbook also provides an appendix with the answers to the odd numbered questions for each chapter. This feature is helpful for a quick checking of your work and understanding of the material. Unfortunately, the answers for Chapter Two were not all there and did not match up with the review questions within the chapter. Chapter Two had 34 questions listed but the appendix answers only showed 21 (See the remaining pictures). As I perused through the rest of the book, the other chapters looked fine. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend this set for students who are studying medical billing and coding.

Better than any other
There for few parts of the book that were slightly vague, but not all textbooks can be perfect. It was an awesome book that taught me how to be an amazing coder. When I first started using this book in class, I had ZERO coding experience. It has taught me everything I need to know to get my foot in the door with coding, and it has most importantly taught me how to LOVE coding. She has real life comments and advice in sections titled "from the trenches" which were very inspiring. I recommend reading those for fun when you feel overwhelmed, and reading the "coding shot" and "stop" sections ALWAYS because they sometimes contain the piece of information you are missing or wondering about. The main (and only) downside to this book that I could point out was all of the practice work. BUT that was most likely my own instructor's fault, NOT the author/publisher. In my class, we used the workbook AND textbook, and were assigned two chapters a week from CPT and one from ICD. We were to do every single "problem"/"question" available in the textbook AND workbook. My class was only 14 weeks long, 5 hours a week, and part of the "Administrative Medical Assisting Program" at my community college. MA's do not code much, or really at all, so it was definitely overkill, and too much to do in too little time, especially for an introductory-level course. If you are a teacher reading this review, debating on using the text for your class, and you care for my thoughts, I would recommend the book over any other, but not assigning all work from both textbook and workbook if you are teaching the class at an introductory level. Instead I would have picked out the most important "problems"/"questions".

Loved it!
Great for learning to code. It’s easy to use and very easy to follow.

More than I expectated!
The way the books were so full of knowledge and thought out were so helpful in teaching me how to apply the new concepts of ICD-10! I also thought the way that each chapter carried over knowledge of the previous chapters so that you didn't forget what you were trying to grasp, was brilliant! I am still working the program so to speak because it actually has planned step by step lessons with exams and everything so I know that when it comes time to take the ICD-10 proficiency exam, I will be ready! Well, between this and CCO, I know I will be ready because they work hand in hand! Great program......fantastic book!

2010 Step-by-Step Medical Coding Text and Workbook Pkg.
I bought the Step-by-Step Medical Coding 2010 Edition - Text book and Workbook Package at the sale price of$65.55 the regular price at that time was $91.95 which was a savings of $26.40. This Medical Coding Text book and Workbook Package has strengthened my ability to code the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS Codes accurately when I was doing my homework assignments and taking online tests in college. It also helped me to apply my critical thinking skills with more than 1,000 questions from Reimbursement, HIPAAand Compliance, Modifiers, Outpatient Coding and Reporting Guidelines, Evaluation and Management, Surgery Guidelines and General Surgery and a excellent overview of the Human Anatomy explained in these ten chapters. This is an excellent resource material for anyone pursuing a Medical Coding Career.

There are TOO many errors in this book.
**I am reviewing the CPT portion of this textbook. The large number of mistakes is absurd. Aren't these authors supposed to experts?I agree with the review that mentions many errors in this book. However, another major problem is that the authors provide "filler" materials instead of explanation of the guidelines and sufficient coding examples. This makes me want to assign a different coding textbook in the future. (1) For sections on the ICD-10-CM system, the majority of the space is devoted to the EXACT copy of the guidelines. What is the point of this? The students can easily find the guidelines in their own ICD-10-CM code book, for God's sake. The authors do NOT explain the guidelines and provide more step by step examples. Talking about filling the space. They simply COPY and PASTE the guidelines into this textbook without explaining the guidelines with the examples. What a joke. (2) For the sections on the CPT manual, there are also many filler materials. The Cardiovascular system section is a classic example. The authors simply repeat/summarize some codes' descriptors. She NEVER discusses some guidelines in the Cardiovascular section. Seriously, if you are just going to ignore those important guidelines, why should anyone spend so much money buying this textbook? Come on.
