A truly Irish tea
I'm just after a year in Co. Mayo where I first started drinking this. Now, back in the states, it's not available locally. I tried the Twinings Irish Breakfast which is English idea of an Irish tea. But it seemed empty and hollow. That's all well and good if the only things you have to do today is write a check to your nanny who looks after your kids, or write letters to your tenants. But if you have actual work to do the Twinings just won't help. I have a scale at home which highly accurate. I used to use it to measure, well, never mind that, but it's very accurate. The weight of the tea in a Lyons tea bag is 3.00 grams. The weight of the tea in a Twinings Irish Breakfast tea bag is 2.00 grams. Another English brand of Irish tea is 2.5 grams. This may not be conclusive of any such thing, but as someone with quite a bit to do in a day I'm much happier with the Lyons. If I can get a bag of Barrys tea I'll give that a weigh and be back.

I've heard an Irishman in America say
"In Ireland there is a great Lyons Tea vs Barry's Tea debate but once you move across this side of the water you forget about all of that. It doesn't matter what type of tea it is as long as it's not from here."Curious, considering my favorite brand of tea was as the time Lipton black tea. I had to put his word to the test.I purchased both a box of Lyons Gold Blend and Barry's Tea Gold Blend and had them simultaneously delivered. My consensus after brewing a cup of both is I'm fine with either Barry's Tea or Lyons Tea as long as I don't have to drink another cup of Lipton ever. The pure richness of the tea is something I've never had before in a black tea. The aroma is strong and the flavor is bold. Even with milk and honey, the tea flavor is never lessened, only enhanced. It is absolutely wonderful and makes me question how Lipton can make tea so flavorless, needing two or even three bags to even come close to one Lyon's bag in terms of strength. As for Lyons vs Barry's, I'm not Irish enough to enter this debate. However, I can give my two cents after trying both.Barry's Tea is darker in color and has a slightly bitter taste. The bitterness persists with milk and honey. This isn't a negative by any means and only seems to enhance the "tea" flavor of the entire brew. It does seem to taste noticeably stronger than Lyons given the same steeping time and amount of milk/honey added.Lyons Tea is a bit softer in color and flavor, and does not have any indication of bitterness at all, yet still has an incredible bold flavor. It is simply better in my opinion only because I prefer a non-bitter tea to a slightly stronger bitter tea.

Lyons Gold Blend...a very fine black tea
I'm a big fan of Lyons Original Blend, a very fine black tea I enjoy regularly. I'm now a fan of Lyons Gold Blend.Lyons promotes their Gold Blend as being their "rich" blend. I'm not sure what that means, and I'll wager Lyons doesn't know what that means. I can report that Gold Blend is another very nice black tea, but to my taste it's "brighter" than Original Blend...whatever that means. Gold Blend does not have the distinctive malty quality I find in Original Blend, a quality that makes Original Blend my preference of the two offerings. (I think I know what "malty" means.) For the tea drinker who enjoys a malty tea, Original Blend will certainly deliver. For those who prefer their tea a bit more balanced or rounded (whatever that means), Gold Blend will meet their expectations. All that said, I will keep both in my rotation...which means I enjoy both for different reasons. You really can't go wrong with either of these very fine black teas. Kudos to Lyons. (Lyons has my permission to describe their Gold Blend as "Our Bright Blend"...again, whatever that means.)Rather than muddle over what rich, balanced, rounded, and brighter mean with regard to tea, do what I do: Have a cup of tea.

Great tea. Terrible shipping packaging.
I love Lyons Gold Blend Tea, I have been drinking it for decades. The issue I have is my most recent purchase arrived in a plastic Amaxon bubble mailer, the package had been completely crushed. Inside, the box was open and crushed with the tea bags spilling out. As Lyons no longer uses cellophane wrapping outside the box this meant they were loose in the outer packaging. Amazon - do better, package this in a box to protect itnext time.

LYONS Brand GOLD is The Best!!! Just ordered my NEXT BOX of LYONS Gold 80 Tea Bags!!!
I used to work with a guy who was born and raised in Ireland, and he told me about this tea. The GOLD version is noticeably better tasting than the Standard one, and, imho, worth the extra charge. He was correct. LYONS Brand GOLD is truly the best tasting of the teas from Ireland, regardless of price. Not sure how they do it, but I'm happy to continue enjoying it, while I still can. BTW, I just ordered my 2ne LYONS Gold 80 Tea Bags, as I continue to enjoy the Aroma, Color, Taste, and the wonderful Relaxation I feel, when I enjoy a cup. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, imho. v/r "The TEA Spectator" :o)

Went from Grand to Bland...
Apparently, it swam over from Ireland, as the "best buy" date gave me only 6 months to enjoy my order. By my estimate, it has spent 18 months in transit/warehouses/stores before showing up on my front doorstep. The good news: it arrived earlier than expected, in relatively good condition (one box slightly crushed) and appears to be genuine product.UPDATE: I reordered a single box so I could finish it quickly (in case it had a short shelf life). The box was crushed by USPS, and some of the bags were visible through breaks in the product box. I kept it anyway, since it's just tea, and I'll pour boiling water over it. But something's changed between last February and this October -- the tea bags aren't pyramids any more, and the flavor seems, well, very bland compared to the previous purchase. It's like a different brand altogether. I'll probably make this my last box of Lyons and just switch back to Barry's or get the Taylor's of Harrogate gold blend. Both were much better than this box of Lyons.
