Drones, quadcopters, Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs): whatever they're called, remotely-controlled aircraft have changed the way we see the world, the way we manage crops, the way we sell real estate, and the way we make war. This book contains tutorials about how to understand what drones can do, and projects about how to make your own flying craft, from some of the earliest practitioners in the field. Review: LOVE IT! - I bought this book for my son who loves all things Make:. My son is in the process of building his own drone and is super-excited to have this book to assist him. It confirmed his research on parts and is an excellent guide through the process. I highly recommend Make: products. They are superior products and offer innovative ideas to the creative mind. Review: Total waste of time and money. - This book is an absolute wast of money. It is not anything like the description that was in the information in the product information section. Due to illness I was delayed in reading it. If I had read it when I received it I would have sent it back. Folks, Don,t wast your money. The book does not even make a good fire starter. I am sorry I was unable to say something nice about it.

Come Josephine in my Flying Machine
I subscribe to 'Make:' magazine, so I might be a bit biased. If you have even a slight interest in robotics, interactive technology, creative building, or you're an inventor (especially one like Doc from 'Back to the Future'), Make: is as much fun as you can possibly have between 2 sheets of paper. This drone book is from some of the same folks, including previously published articles/projects, all placed in order so you can get a comprehensive overview of the world of drones and quads. The really great thing about this book is that it gives realistic expectations to the budding builder and flyer. The people at Make: really know how to get your brain churning and make your vision a reality.

Some good info, but not what I was expecting.
Interesting book, but not quite what I was hoping for. I was hoping for a book with tutorials on how to build a drone. Basically, this is a book a collection of articles written about drones. When I see DIY. I assume this is going to instruct me on how to easily make something, at home, by myself. There is some good information in the book as far as what parts are best, what you need to make a drone, etc. But as to the actual building of the drone, it's pretty short on information. Especially for a novice. The book seems to be disjointed on the information that it does give you and the illustrations don't always match the written instructions. All in all, I don't think this book should be sold has a DIY book because it doesn't deliver.

Not worth the money. Misses the mark on several points. Just search YouTube for Free
While this is a bit better than other Make books we have tried, this still misses the target audience, as to who is your target audience. Some instructions here are simple, and others completely miss simplicity. They need to pick their audience and stick with it. Is this book for novices, or people that understand all the parts and just need step by step body construction while skipping step by step electronics construction. Example: Tutorial Section: (A tutorial to me would include step by step instructions for making something). From their book: "The first two articles explain how drones are used to crate beautiful examples of aerial photography and videos...the third...how enthusiasts are putting drones to work. Essentially these are news articles, they aren't teaching you how to do something. That is found later in the "projects" section. The project section spends a lot of time on body construction, but not on electronics. Further, they have photos marked A, B etc, and several of the letters aren't explained. Again, who is the audience, a beginner, or someone else?

An interesting read
"DIY Drone and Quadcopter Projects: A Collection of Drone-Based Essays, Tutorials, and Projects" is one of those books that after I selected it on a whim, I went, "WHY DID I DO THAT?" I don't build machine-like stuff. I can change a tire and a battery. I can make a lamp with a lamp kit, but I'm not a weekend hobbyist builder of things. I also have a knee-jerk negative reaction when I see the word 'drone.' The above may be why I ended up enjoying the book because while it does have step by step projects with illustrations. It was the essays on drone use (it isn't just military) that I found enlightening and enjoyable. I probably won't be trying the projects out although my son and friend think they might have a go at one. It seems an expensive hobby so I'm hoping that it doesn't go much further. That's another that I appreciated is that it is fairly clear that it isn't a cheap hobby. As such, I gave it a 4-star because I liked that it gave a decent overview in the essays, tutorials, and projects.

More like a special issue of Make magazine than a book
Make Magazine often writes about drone and quadrocopter projects, and this book collects some of their articles about them. It's not too many pages, and it is just a collection of previously published material and not a book written as a book. In general, the material comes together pretty well, but not as good as if a book had been written. I was expecting something a little more substantive than this. If you are just getting into drones and quadrocopters, this book may be just what you need. If you are more advanced, you'll want to look elsewhere. There are just the basics here.

Not more than a collection of articles and essays with full-page pictures of people and their drones
I should have paid attention to the complete title of this book because it reads “A Collection of Drone-Based Essays, Tutorials, and Projects”. This book is just that - a collection of essays and articles from various sources. Some articles are very news-like and they read like they are directly copied from newspapers or magazines. In fact this “book” is so thin, it almost looks like a magazine. There are three parts in this thin book with many pages that are wasted with full-page, magazine-like pictures of people flying their drones or drones themselves. There is very little instruction in this thin book. I can guarantee you that if you are only relying on this book to make drones, you will be very disappointed. There are many helpful guides available on the Internet. There are many YouTube videos. Unfortunately, this book does not deliver what it promises.
