My underground dog fence encloses 3 acres (rectange 500ft by 250ft). After walking the property and not finding any obvious issues, I purchased the PetSafe Wire Break Locator. It arrived in two days and was very easy to set up. I had the break located in a matter of minutes. The locator works by sending two different radio signals in opposite directions. In my case, I followed the steady signal (green light). The break was located when the green light and steady tone switched over to red light and beeping tone. In my case, the beeping tone was present, but not very loud. Per the instructions, this is due to long distance of twisted wire to get from the garage (where the transmitter is located) to the edge of the property (in my case about 80ft of twisted wire). Great product. A must-have for DIY dog fence owners!

The locator, with the grounding the wire kit set up, was very easy to use and found several breaks in the wire. Once I fixed the detected breaks with the gel-filled capsules, the controller stopped beeping and my dog could be out in our yard safe once again. However, the locator was not able to detect breaks near the house from chipmunks nawing through the wire - there was just enough of a connection that it was not a complete break. That has always been a problem and I knew I had to dig around my front stoop to find them which I did and fixed them with the gel-filled capsules.

I have to say that there is nothing that I don't like about this wire break locater by PetSafe. I read through the instructions before I started anything to familiarize myself with the process. That made it easy to use and finding the breaks was super easy. The boundary perimeter is almost 1800' and randomly digging in areas that could be a problem would have taken forever. Especially since the underground fence has been in place for almost 7 years. Briars, brambles, trees, weeds and vines have overgrown the wire fencing and I knew I had two choices in fixing the problem. One was to replace all the wire which is a difficult and costly endeavor. A box of over 100 landscape staples were needed the first time so it wouldn't have been just the cost of wire. It also would have taken at least two days to lay the wire properly which means a lot of bending over and kneeling on the ground. My second option was to purchase the PetSafe Wire Break Locator. The purchase price was less than the cost of replacement wire and staples, not to mention time saved and also an aching back and sore knees. I won't go into the step by step process as to how I found the breaks....there were two....as the instructions are very well written and easy to understand. Just take your time, don't get in a hurry and before you know it, your fence will be back in perfect working order. The only tools I had to supply was a hammer, a set of wire strippers, and roll of black electrical tape and a strong garden fork to dig for the broken wire. It took about 1 1/2 hours to thoroughly walk the fence perimeter, find and then fix the broken areas. I highly recommend this unit...it will save you time, money, and possibly a missing pet or worse!

These locators are cheap pieces of electronics. This is the 4th one that stopped working and most of the time it doesn't make any sounds. This is the second time I've used it! I'm so mad that I bought another one! For the profit that I'm sure Petsafe is making with these, they could use better electronics to keep their customers happy and returning. In the video, this section is definitely not broken and should have a signal!

I would give this 10 stars if I could! If you have an in ground fence you need this. It’s not if it’s going to break, it’s when. I found my break in just a few minutes. I have used other methods to find a break and they were very time consuming and back breaking. Everything about this kit is great. Even the extending stick thing is long enough for me and I’m 6’5” tall. I know it’s pricey, but just get it. It’s sooooo worth it. There’s a video on YouTube to show how to use it. Just watch it and follow the simple instructions.

I wish this was available 20 years ago. It would have saved me untold money when we redid landscaping, and I paid the local Invisible Fence franchise $300+ each time they came out to locate and fix a fence break. Some time ago I tried using an electronic component and an AM radio as instructed by the Internet but was never able to get this arrangement to work. This unit is easy to set up and easy to use. As an added bonus, the instructions are both clear and concise (a nice change of pace). I bought it to locate a break I created last week while replacing fence posts. I had a general idea of where the break was and located it to within a foot in less than five minutes. I would like to think that anyone who can read and follow simple instructions can be successful locating breaks with this unit and save themselves the trouble and expense of paying a service to do it for them.

This device is awesome. Works very well & I easily found the line break in my perimeter wire. As a FYI, I used it to find the break in my AutoMower (robotic lawnmower) perimeter wire. Saved me hours and hours of work. Great engineering & user interface. Pete

We install remote mowers and through the winter the mice had eaten a customers ground wire. We hooked this unit up and with very small learning curve we found the breaks in the ground wire. Awesome little unit.

This product worked perfectly to help fix my in ground fence. I originally was hesitant as the price seemed steep... but it took me under an hour to get the break located and repaired. Considering the age of the system (18 years), I imagine I may be using this break detector again at some point. It's worth the investment! Recommended :)

If you have breaks in the wire this will find them. We ran our wire around a fence. Not underground. Who does that. Found the break in hours. We had looked for days

**Update**: The second year my fence developed a break I set about setting this product up for use. When I plugged it in, a loud pop was heard and the unit began smoking and growing hot. Literally caught fire in my hands. Sadly, there is no other method for detecting wirebreaks in this fence. So I have to order another one. Angry face. I ordered this product as my in-ground fence has developed a frustrating series of line breaks. I tried the AM radio method of locating the breaks on my 5 acres, but it wasn't working for me, so 150$ later here we go. It's relatively simple to set up and use. Honestly, I wonder why it's not included with the original kit, as I'm pretty sure every owner of this system is going to experience hidden line breaks over the years. After following some ghost transmissions for awhile, I did eventually locate my break, so kudos to the system for working mostly as advertised. The detector stick (my kids call it the minesweeper) did stop working briefly for no apparent reason but then started working again a few minutes later. 3 stars, mostly due to price and it should really be a part of the original in-ground fence kit, not a pricey addition for something that will definitely happen.
