Useful in plant diagnostics
I've just finished testing this.First off, I think it would be much nicer if there was a status LED to say that it's actually powered up, just because the battery could be dead and it would look the same.Others here are bothered by the momentary switch but that doesn't bother me and I like that it can't be left on. The flashlight, which is pretty good, is also a momentary switch.--- Everything I tested was at 24VDC ---Mine picks up MAC valves well, but doesn't see our SMC valves, like the SMC VQ4101 that we have a lot of here.Ice cube relays read well, but the tool has to be near the end with the coil so there's no dragging it across the top of a bank of relays in a panel. Fortunately it has the little flashlight to be able to look the relays over and identify the coil side.Contactors are a little sloppy, they read but trigger the tool from several inches which could lead to false alerts if several contractors are close together.Overall I think this tool is worth the asking price, not perfect, but it's usefulness is greater than the price so I'm doing 5 starsEdit: accidentally discovered the little cap that pulls off the back side and appears to do nothing has a magnet in it to verify the tool with!

Must have being instrument tech
This should be standard issue being an instrument tech. When things can change in the field in a brief second. This is better than using a meter. Just wish it would stay on and time out vs holding the button. But does work on parker and asco coils. 24v and 120v ✅

Extech MD10 Non-contact Magnet Detector with Built-in Flashlight
This handy little Extech MD10 magnet detector has been working well for verifying electrical operation of solenoid valves, relays and motors. When the test button is depressed, the tip will glow blue when it detects the magnetic field from either permanent magnets or an electrically energized AC or DC coil. It either glows steadily when a strong magnetic field is detected or will flash on and off if the magnetic field is very weak. This detector is about the same size as a regular stick type non-contact voltage detector and is powered by two AAA batteries that are included. There is also a useful LED flashlight that is quite bright for its size located on the opposite end of the tester. The push button for the flashlight must be pressed continuously to keep the light on as it not designed to latch in the on position. The removable cap that covers the LED lens tends to fall off when you handle the tester, so I put a small dab of Saunders UHU Tac removable adhesive putty under it to hold it in place, but still allow it to be removed if necessary. It seems like a decent unit and the price I paid for it here on Amazon was also very reasonable, so overall I'm happy with the purchase.

Great gadget
I'm Attracted to gadgets and this is no exception. Ever wonder if that soleniod is actually functioning? Or does that relay actually have a current through it? This will let you know simply by holding it near the relay and holding the button. Great for HVAC or Electrician work. It detects the magnetic field of the device. completely safe as you don't need to touch any connections and it's a quick test.

Great tool!
Works great to find energized relays but unfortunately it can’t catch 5V relays.

great for checking electric trailer brakes.
I bought this to check the electric brakes on my camper. It works great. Pull the breakaway switch and look for the magnetic field on the brake drum. I couldn't be more easy.

Three Stars
Very useful for troubleshooting. However, sometimes the light gets stuck on even when there is no magnet.

handy tool!
fits in pocket, easy to use.works very well and seems to be decently built.I've been using one in an industrial setting for over a year and the only thing I've had to worry about was my colleagues stealing it for themselves!worth the purchase price.
