I think this was a great value at around $13. The box I bought was around 12 X 8 X 4" outside dimensions. The double walls are about 1/4" thick from inside to outside, so you would subtract 1/2" from L X W X H to get the inside dimensions. Pretty much as stated. The metal is about 21 gauge , about 0.034" thick and in between the two walls there is fiberglass insulation -- about 3/16" thick. This includes the top, side walls, and bottom. Mine was nicely coated with gloss tan paint. The two keys in the envelope inside the box operated the latch easily. This box should provide a good measure of protection from fire and it's reasonably secure. Obviously, boxes like this are not safes and someone with tools could manage to open it, but if you need that level of security, get a fireproof safe or rent a safe deposit box at your bank. For what this is intended to be, I think it's a great value and every bit as well made and functional as another one like it I have. The only issue with mine was that one of the corners on the lid was slightly bent outward, but it still closes perfectly well and functionality is not impaired.

I read a few of the reviews before I purchased this product. Some of the reviews were less than stellar. I don't think they were talking about the product I received. I got a box that was heavy duty with a decent lock on it. This box is sturdy, double walled, and seems to have some heft to it. The only thing that would make it better, would be to add a latch. I use this box to safely store my LiPo batteries. I did line it with rubber shelf liner to protect the batteries. I leave the key in the lock so when I need to get into the box, I just unlock it. I put a dab of glue on the key to insure that it does not fall out of the lock. It works great. There are not a lot of products that get 5 stars from me. You won't be sorry when purchasing this product. ED.IT 4/16/18: I outgrew the first box and just placed an order for another. This is a good box and a great value for less than $20

I needed a replacement for a cheaper "cash box" that I bought at Office Depot, used for a brief time, then forgot the combination. I had to break into it with a pair of pliers> It took me less than 5 minutes with a locking plier to yank loose and destroy the lock so that one was not very secure I guess.I read a lot of reviews and comparisons, finally chose this security box first for the key lock and I know the company has a good reputation for making secure filing cabinets, desks, and credenzas, so I feel this will also protect my items as well, at least deter a would-be thief in the house.I need it for some of my more expensive medications, paperwork that I have to keep, and any cash that I might have rather than carry it around, so this will serve my needs very well. It is roomy, more than adequate for my needsOh, and I don't think this lock will be foiled very easily​ by a senior citizen with a locking plier.

The perfect lock safety box to put your important papers in, or whatever else you consider valuable.The Steelmaster is fire retardant, light, easy to carry, and is, I think, is the best priced lock box you can buy anywhere online.I have several of them, use them for everything from paperwork on the vehicles to medications to be kept away from the grandkids.I have only one small issue, and that is that after a 4 or 5 years the simple key/tumbler lock stops working.Perhaps it is the tumblers inside the lock, or maybe the key gets worn, but after a long while the lock doesnt unlock in the first try, and you have to try it a couple of times before it opens.Now, it does give you a warning in the sense that it does not just freeze up one day. It does unlock, but when this happens it's time to buy a new one.This may just be normal wear and tear...after all, its an $18 box with a very simple key/lock mechanism and it should not be expected to work forever.I have not let this deter me from buying, as I said, many of these boxes, and will continue to buy them....until I hit the lottery and can afford a rich man's lock box.Well worth the money, does what its supposed to do, and always the best price right her on amazon. The same box is $30 bucks at Sears, and about that same price anywhere else you look online.

I have no idea WHAT some of these people are talking about, but I can tell you if I had paid any heed to to their idiotic reviews, I would have missed out on getting a really great security box for my checkbook, records, and sensitive statements I don't want others to see. Certainly, it isn't absolutely break-in-proof (no box really is), but if anyone tries to open it, there is no way that person's efforts can go undetected, thus DISCOURAGING them from even trying - and so this box HAS SERVED ITS PURPOSE! HA! They won't want me to know they've been trying to see how much money I have in my account, but I will have caught them red-handed! The box is very well constructed, locks and unlocks just fine. It is the ONLY box out there in the perfect size - smaller than most of the others but big enough to hold quite a few documents and small objects. If you are interested in keeping something hidden from the snooping eyes of someone who doesn't want you to know they tried to access that information, this is the box for YOU! If you are looking for an indestructible container for valuables and jewels, go get a real safe. Never mind the incompetent reviewers who left the negative reviews - they probably mishandled the lock and are hastily blaming STEELMASTER - a company who has done a superb job!
