FrSkyCompact XSR-SIM USB Dongle for FrSky Transmitters and Module System

Along with the FrSky Taranis X9 Lite, works great as a wireless controller solution.

It is not too expensive and works perfectly with my Radiomaster TX16s. I use it with Drone Racing League but it will bind to multiple radios and work with multiple simulators. It was very easy to bind after plugging it into PC. Once it’s bound to your radio, you don’t have to do it again. No more cord dangling around getting in my way! I love it and highly recommend it if you prefer to be wireless when flying simulators.

It sets up as easy as advertised and has been fast and flawless ever since. It works perfectly with all my drone simulators. If the simulator supports the radio controller, it will support this contol stick too. I will recommend it for everyone. Only down side is the radio is not being charged while using it, when it was connected to the USB cable. However I like the wireless options better most of the time. The radio still lasts a long time, for hours. I am very happy with this product.

I purchased this dongle and a FrSky X20S remote at the same time and they would not bind to each other right out of the box. After a bit of head scratching and looking for completely non existent documentation I found success by updating the dongle firmware and binding using D16 no telem on all 16 channels. The Firmware update procedure is not straight forward at all. Download the firmware, unzip, copy correct file to USB on controller, pop the outer case off the dongle, connect the dongle via 3 lead holes to the S port in the right order (with a cable I made from old breadboard jumpers...), open the firmware on controller, flash by wire... Basically find a YouTube video and follow that. There's no specific instructions for the X20 line at this point but the process is fairly similar to other controllers. Once completed channels 1-8 present as game controller axis and sliders and 9-16 present as game controller buttons. You have to then map the gimbals, sliders, switches, etc to whatever channels you want in the Mixer settings within the Model menu on the controller. Once that's all mapped out verify things are working as expected in your game controller control panel settings on Windows if you're running that. If you're happy there open your sim and set your controls to the proper inputs. I've used this extensively now with RealFlight 9.5 and Velocidrone on Windows 10 with 9 channels controlling every function available and I've also tested with FPV Freerider and Freerider Reloaded on Android through an OTG adapter. Basically, after some initial headache getting things loaded I'm a huge fan. It's way more stable and realistic than a straight USB, connects instantly every time it's plugged in, and once you get the hang of how things are working dare I say easy to config within sims. I've included lots of screenshots to help people out if they are hitting the same binding issues I had. Knocked one point off because it is WAAAAAY more complicated than it should be to get working and the documentation, if you can even call it that, is abysmal. Won't go below 4 because once it's fired up it is an awesome bit of tech.

Yes it does work with FrSky Taranis X9D+ 2019It was necessary (for me) to upgrade firmware in BOTH, the Taranis RF module as well as the dongle.The Taranis X9D+ 2019 RF-module firmware is available at frsky-rc.com/taranis-x9d-plus-2019/The dongle firmware is available at the frsky-rc.com/xsr-sim/I find it a bit odd that this dongle came shipped with crazy old firmware that did not work as shipped.

This module will not bind with the brand new Taranis X7 transmitter that I purchased along with it. Both are FrSky products. As many other reviewers have pointed out, there is a firmware incompatibility that prevents this RX module from binding to some newer transmitters. Updating the firmware is a hassle and huge waste of time, and the instruction manual says nothing about how to do it. I had to find a youtube video. Seems completely crazy that FrSky would introduce a firmware update that would break compatibility between their own products, and then mention nothing about it in the operating manuals...but so it is.

Latency is noticeably higher vs USB mode with my BetaFPV LiteRadio 2, but it's tolerable. I think the rate of update of the stick positions is just lower than USB mode. With USB mode it was getting real hot due to charging and transmitting at the same time, so I was using another flight profile with the TX turned off for the sim. Now I don't have to use OpenTX to flash the firmware on the controller every time I want to switch between the simulator and my Tiny Whoop -- all I have to do is change between D8 and D16 FCC modes on the controller! Much more convenient.EDIT: If you're wanting to play competitively this is NOT going to work. Stick with USB.

Bound on first attempt with QX7S ACCST transmitter.Green light was solid and didn’t flash after binding was done in case that happens to anyone else.Was able to set up channel 5 and 6 in my simulator model for the simulator reset and flaps inputs
