Q: I am 5ft 8, 185lbs with 22" thighs, would it be too much of a stretch (pun intended)?

I would think if you go by the guide, they should work for you. I'm 5'11", 130 lbs & I get size C & they fit fine. I believe tbey'll refund your money if they're not right.

Q: Why was the original elastic stay up band replaced with a larger band? The stockings pull away from the band right out of package very first use.

Yes, the wide seems a little loose - I have had to use large rubber bands to help them stay up.

I bought C-D. I’m 5’6” about 185 lbs. Don’t know if this helps.

I got a c-d. I have a little jiggle at the top of the thigh and I was afraid of the spillover look while wearing them but they fit great and would definitely stretch farther up my legs if I was taller.
