I gave my sister a computer with a newer computer case. Newer cases do not generally have drive bays like they use to so you can use a internal cd/dvd player. Thus, we needed an external drive to play dvds and also burn data from cds/dvds to the computer and back.This Asus model has worked perfect for all of that. It has not gotten a lot of use but has worked fine when it did. It is relatively quiet, and while not nearly as fast as something like an external ssd, it is still fairly quick. It is left unplugged on top of my sis's desk and only gets plugged in if she is using it.It seems of good quality and is a very reasonable price. It has solved the issue on not having an internal cd/dvd drive, and sis can use it on any computer, and myself also if I need to borrow it. This portability I think makes it a better option anyway than an internal one.So no cons. We both like it and it has worked well.

This cd player is plug and play right away and has lasted three years without any problem. I recently thought I was having trouble with it because it started making noise and then ground to a halt and wouldn't open the bay for a few seconds. Turns out it was caused by a read/write cd that had a paper label put on it with the names of the songs and this paper label was rubbing against something inside the cd player. I was able to slowly remove the paper label using a q tip and isopropyl alcohol and then cleaned it with a damp rag, and then the cd played fine.

On the positive side - it worked well with my mini Mac. It was straightforward - I connected it through the USB-C port, and it worked without needing to install anything. It's also very small, and I appreciate its simplicity.On the negative side, the package was not in the best condition. The box was slightly broken, and it seemed it had been wet with some soapy substance because it showed water marks and tiny soap bubbles on the external drive. It also seemed stained from the incident. I considered returning it, but I kept it since it worked well. The last thing - because it's so small, it's flimsy. The whole structure moves when you put in or take out a disc.One last note: When I tried to play a DVD, it had those awful region restrictions. I disabled the Apple video player as the default and started using VLC, and all my DVDs work.

I had another CD drive. It would take me at least 30-40 minutes to write a backup CD (~600-650MB). This drive cuts that down to less than 5 minutes.

My new Asus gaming laptop didn't come with an optical drive, and I had some info on discs that I needed. Sticking with Asus, I decided on this little portable external drive, and it was a great choice. It works well, although it feels a little flimsy, reads quickly, and seems a good value for the money. It came with all of the necessary cords, and they were just the right length for use. All in all, I'm satisfied with this purchase. I can't speak to its longevity, yet, but based on my use to date, it seems like it will last.
