This jointer gave me a professional finish
It is possible to use a spare piece of plastic piping to achieve a half decent finish to your mortar joints. However, if you are re-pointing slabs on a patio (which I needed this for) you may find some of the joints are differing thicknesses, so it's best to use a 'proper' tool for the job. The advantage of this mortar jointer from the OX brand is that it offers you two sizes in one tool - I went for the 5/8" and 3/4" one (16mm & 19mm) which helps me to achieve a more accurate and better finish on my mortar joints. It's also made from stainless steel - so shouldn't present rust issues.I used this convex mortar jointer to finish off my patio slab re-pointing project. If you are considering purchasing one of these for a similar job (and you are a novice like me) I can recommend a very useful (no waffle guaranteed) YouTube video entitled: How to Point Paving Slabs - a Simple Patio Jointing Guide for Beginners by Christopher Barr. Chris gives an excellent easy-to-follow demonstration which gave me the confidence to 'have a go' myself.Anyway, I used this mortar jointer (together with an Ox Tuck Pointer and an OX Gauging Trowel) and I'm very pleased with how my 'project' turned out. Without trying to blow my own trumpet, I honestly don't believe a professional could have achieved a better finish - though I appreciate they would have been very much quicker at it than me! Once I'd finished with the jointer, I dried it off with a cotton rag, and 'attached' it to the wall-mounted magnetic strips in my workshop. This appears to be a well-made product, it's comfortable to use, and it's sensibly priced - I therefore have no hesitation in recommending it to you.

Does the job BUT……..
It does the job well, easy to use and leaves a nice smooth finish. But unfortunately it’s not stainless steel as advertised which is a big disappointment, it means if it’s left damp it rusts and this will eventually spoil the tool because the pitted surface will become sticky and drag the finish.
