If you have a “Scarf and Barf” cat READ THIS!
UPDATE!I’ve had the feeder for several weeks now and It definitely does it’s job! My kitty seems much less stressed when we leave and seems to have much less food insecurity. She goes running as soon as it calls her! I haven’t had any issues yet with her knocking it over but we have it wedged in a corner. The slow feeder modifications we made seem to do the trick and no clogs or missed feedings yet! So far- a great investment! If you have a “scarf and barf” cat- read this!Portion size and servings was a major factor in my search for an auto feeder, but also how it was dispensed. I read in most reviews on this product that one portion is approximately 1 TBSP- however I tested this with my own cats kibble and the portion size does vary for each feeding a bit. This may have just as much to do with size and shape of kibble- but my kibbles are well within the range they suggest. I tested about 1 portion about 10 times and sometimes it resulted in a scant TBSP and other times it was a heaping TBSP- almost 1.5 TBSP. Now if your cat has a strict diet- this may be an issue- and I will be monitoring my kitty for weight gain to be sure she is being fed appropriately.Another reason I selected this feeder was because I was hoping the two bowls would slow her down as she has a tendency to “scarf and barf”. My cat is one who typically has to use a slow feeder or food puzzle to keep from eating too fast. With the bowls being open she was definitely able to eat too fast still. I pursued a small silicone slow feeder mat that fit perfectly into one of the bowl holders and attached it with Velcro so I could still remove it for cleaning. In the other bowl a place a semi- large rock- flat enough for her to get around, heavy enough that she can’t remove it, but small enough that she can push it around to get to kibbles around it. So far- both of these have helped slow her down- I am experimenting to see which works best.IF YOU HAVE TWO CATS! BE WARNED the proportions that end up in each bowl can vary greatly! Sometimes you get an even amount in each bowl- but more often that not- it seemed to dispense 25%-50% more in the left side bowl.We had two good reasons for getting an auto feeder. One: she is food obsessed and cries at us non stop if we even walk near her food cabinet or open anything that sounds like it could be food. She is perfectly healthy but I thought allowing her to “graze” more throughout the day would be helpful. Second- when we go out of town- our cat sitter is unable to make it home right at dinner time and then my cat becomes frantic and starts getting into things searching for food! So hopefully this will also help her not miss meals- and take the pressure off our sitter to get off work in time to feed her.SO FAR the feeder is doing its job! It was very easy to program and set a recording. It was also very easy to assemble- though you must let the batteries kick on and start working before plugging it it. I was pushing buttons trying to get it to work and it did not start working until I did this. Not a problem- just a quirk. Also we had to prime the hopper by lifting it out and turning it several times to get food into each dispensing compartment before it would start dispensing properly. Some people commented on it not being too sturdy. We have ours wedged into a corner- so that probably deters her from trying. So far- seems pretty solid! Also, the lid seems to lock well in place and you have to push the unlock button pretty hard and lift the lid simultaneously- so I don’t think my cat will be able to find a way in.Hope this review helps you decide! Most of these don’t seem to be made for cats like mine but we’ve made it work!

holding up after three years
I've been using this feeder for three years, so I feel pretty confident recommending it. I purchased this feeder after realizing my bigger cat was bullying the smaller one away from their first feeder, which only had one large dish. With two dishes, there's still a little bit of the 'wanting the food in the bowl the other one is using' (cats, am I right?) but overall both cats are able to eat comfortably in peace. I love watching them figure out the meal times and start hovering around it minutes before it goes off, or making mad dashes from across the house once they hear the kibble hit the bowl.PROS-Three years in and still works perfectly. Have not had one single issue.-Easy to set up. I've read some reviews where people had difficulties, but I can't say I experienced any problems.-Easy to adjust portions/time AFTER initial set up. Meaning, if you realize you want to set it for an earlier time, add a meal, or adjust a portion, you don't have to jump through hoops to do so.-The 'low food' indication is super obvious and can't be missed (as long as you aren't shoving it in a corner that you never pass by.)-Dispenses food evenly, I don't have to worry about one bowl getting more than the other.-I personally have not had an issue with my cats figuring out how to get in/tip it over. My cats are pretty food motivated, but it wouldn't surprise me that a more determined kitty might figure it out. It is pretty sturdy, but if you jostle it hard enough it does dispense a few kibble. The lid is pretty secure and requires pushing a button to open so I'd be pretty impressed with a cat that figured that out!CONS-The sound of the food hitting the metal bowl is loud. Startled me awake a few times.-The trays for the food bowl can be a pain to attach. The two bowls are actually separate, and each tray has a notch that slides into the base of the feeder. I always struggle getting both trays to sit comfortably without knocking one off.-The portion sizes are confusing. But this is really only an issue when first setting up. After the first time it dispenses you can easily adjust the portions based on how much/little food got dispensed.Overall, I highly recommend an automatic feeder to cat owners that struggle with fast eaters that regurgitate their food or being pestered to death to feed them. I am able to give my cats small meals throughout the day at a consistent time, and they've learned that begging me for a meal won't make it come faster. Also makes being gone for a day or two easier as we don't have to rely on a sitter.
