An all-around slicer
If you like a relatively thin, slicey flat-grind blade in a camping knife, read on. That's what you've got here, a big, broad blade with a distinctive bog-oak handle. As many have noticed, it should excel for food prep, but do fine with other tasks including bushcrafting things. I probably won't carve many spoons in my life but I sure do like to cook and eat. I knew this was a line of pretty good budget knives, but once I learned they were made in Ukraine I had to pick one out and buy it, and luckily this guy is perfect for me. The sheath is really nice, thick leather, well made, and very tight. I doubt it will ever loosen up to the point it's a problem. And yes, it's very, very sharp out of the box. All knives dull with use, so that's not a long-term plus, you have to be able to resharpen that knife, but it tells you the makers are meticulous and too proud to let a just-OK edge go out the door. Also it's made of a solid carbon steel, and and you know it'll resharpen up beautifully because of that excellent factory edge. If this knife doesn't meet your needs they have others, but if it does don't hesitate. Yes, it's high value, but more than that I think this guy will prove its worth in any campsite task you put it to. I'm just glad I got in on, if not the ground floor, early enough to benefit.

Solid knife
A solid choice for a bushcraft/outdoors knife. You can’t go wrong with this very sharp, lightweight knife in the forest or the kitchen. Since I got the BPS Beta this Savage has become my go to kitchen knife, somewhat small to be a chef’s knife but it’s excellent for slicing and dicing most meat and vegetables. The super thin, sharp blade is very slicy, be careful not to lay yourself open.

Excellent especially for the price!
This is my second bps knife. The first was the Camp knife with the Ferro rod and Scandi grind. An excellent bushcraft knife. But the Scandi grind is not ideal for food prep.This is one reason I got the Savage. The full flat grind is similar to that of a heavy French chef's knife. Also, I fell in love with the look of it!It's a very fine, workmanlike knife-- fits the hand perfectly, arrived razor sharp and holds an edge well and sharpens easily. The fit and finish is imperfect. Bog oak (very nice handle) needs a little sanding and another coat of Danish oil. The full tang needs a look over and any overy crisp edges softened.Others have criticized the sheath, saying it did not fit. That was my first impression but I smeared a lot of beeswax leather conditioner on it and heated it over the stove to melt it into the leather. I inserted the knife (tight fit), added more conditioner and heat--and now the knife is a near perfect fit, and with use, it will become perfect.For the price--this is a stupendous knife!

The knife I didn't know I was looking for
Sure, there's places for improvement like the handle, but this is exactly what I've been looking for. A simple, no nonsense knife that's extremely customizable.Because the scales are bolted and not riveted it's extremely easy to remove for carving shaping and doing a full blade forced patina.Even if you don't customize any of it, just practice basic carbon steel wood handled knife maintenance (patina the blade, keep it wiped with oil, oiling the wood scales) and you still have a fantastic knife.The blade size is basically between a pairing knife and a full size kitchen knife. Making it ideal for the bulk of my needs: fish preparation, outdoor cooking prep and general outdoor tasks.The sheath leather isn't surface coated, it's dyed through the entire leather - so when I cut it down and restitched it for a smaller profile, I didn't need to re-dye the edges. Speaking of the sheath, the stitching side is wide enough to be used as an effective strop for the blade!Thoroughly impressed.

Absolute BEST deal on Amazon!
This was my fourth or fifth BPS Knife. The Savage is absolutely my favorite! The feel of this blade just screams "quality". Perfect for everything from cooking to chopping, bushcraft to self defense. This is just an amazing knife and a beautiful piece of work.

Just OK but not for bushcraft.
Overall it's just OK. It was not very sharp out of the box. Barely cut paper. Very rough finishing work on handle and tang. Rough grind marked everywhere. The sheath is quality but does not fit the knife well at all. It's extremely tight to the point where the knife will not go all the way in. Flat Grind on the blade is good but the thickness is very thin and flexible. Almost like a kitchen knife. Overall it is not what I expected and it is being returned.

Knife = Good / Sheath = Good/ knife + sheath = bad
You can get a negative from 2 positives. The knife is great, lite, thin, sharp, even grind. The sheath is good quality thick leather with a nice dangler and belt loop combo… Unfortunately the sheath is not designed for this blade and the blade will cut the inside while being sheathed. Very hard to push in… Sheath is for the BPS HK5 blade. I have the hk5 as well and it’s the same sheath. The HK5 fits the Savage’s sheath perfectly.If the sheath fit this knife it would be a complete value. It is a big issue for me to have a knife that cuts the sheath. HK5 is a better buy and a little thicker than this blade. The savage is a little thicker than a kitchen knife (you bush guys will love the thin profile and 90 degree spine). That 90 degree spine runs through the entire handle, but you do not feel any discomfort while using the knife (none at all). Fit and finish is safe to say rough around the edges but acceptable for the price. The knife itself exceeded my expectations, the sheath (fit only, materials are good) is a disappointment. Hk5 was great knife, I wish the hk6 was available on Amazon.This will not retire me from these knives but if you plan on only buying 1 BPS go for a model that has an appropriate sheath supplied. Everything else is great with the price in mind.
