For those who use the rb42s with this, what amp/receiver do you use? planning on a 3.1 set up for now and possibly upgrade to a 5.1 someday. thanks.

I use a Denon x1600h I got on sale. Can get a renewed one on Amazon right now for $330. Could also search used/sales for 5-7ch's. Check homeaudio/theater and alike sub-reddits for recommendations/sites for deals, etc. I don't utilize other channels except the sub out at the moment but I didn't want to box myself in. Love my Denon and these Micca's sound stunning for the $.

Is this a better center channel than the mb42x?

Simply put, yes it is. This is Micca’s “Reference” line which took the great parts about the MB series of products and made them even better sounding, and arguably better looking. I’m biased at this point but I don’t think there’s any better value in high fidelity speakers. Get one and enjoy!

I have 4 sony cs-5 bookshelve speakers for a 5.1 system. would the rb42-c be a good match for center channel ?

El Jay, the Micca RB42-C is a very balanced sounding speaker that will make a good center channel. The Sony's you currently are listening to have a sensitivity rating of 87db and the Micca's are rated at 86db. That is close enough. I do not know the sound characteristics of the Sonys so I can't tell how they would blend in a system. Hope this helps.

Do you need special cables to hook these up?

You speaker wires need banana plugs on the end that hooks to the speaker. If your wires need these plugs, they are very inexpensive and you can get the kind that don't need tools or solder to connect.
