Q: does the 250 Ohm version require an amp?

I am happily using the 250 Ohm model without a separate headphone amp. I have it plugged into one of the headphone outputs of a RME UFX for normal use. I have also used it plugged directly into a computer's headphone output. In both cases I am very happy with the performance and volume of the headphones - so my conclusion is no they don't need a headphone amp.However, if you have one use it.

Q: How comfortable are they? Are the circumaural?

Definitely circumaural. In fact, there is room to spare inside the cups. Ears hardly touch the sides, and my ears are normal or slightly larger. As for comfort, yes they are some of the most comfortable headphones I've ever had on, and I've tried a lot. Very light clamping pressure, but sufficient. Soft velour cup pads are fantastic. As for sound (although you did not ask), they are phenomenal; just incredible. I could write an essay on why they're so good, but suffice to say, the best semi open back pro headphones you can possibly get for $300. I have never regretted buying them. Alongside my Vitamix blender, they are probably my favorite purchase ever.

Q: what kind of cable does it feature?

When slack, the "phone-coil cord" cable length runs around 4 ft. and can stretch comfortably to approximately 10 ft.- long enough to move around in most studio situations. The jack is 1/8" with a screw-on 1/4" adapter.

Q: How do these compare to the DT-990 Pros--250ohm?

If anyone's interested, I just returned the DT990 Pro 250 Ohm in favor of the DT880 Pro 250. Haven't gotten the 880s yet but if what I've read is accurate the have to be a better choice for me. I couldn't stand the 990s any longer. VERY over colored in the high end and the bass would give a bowling ball a headache. Totally blanketed the midrange. Might be the ticket for gamers, over the top CGI heavy movies, or if you like over emphasized bass in your music. Just not accurate at all.
