Q: Is it compatible with the 40D

JM-A romote which is another choice for canon in product detail page is compatible with the 40D, and this is the JM-C remote which wouldn't be compatible. Hope that would be helpful for you.

Q: Does this allow you to take shots from afar wirelessly? Does it work well and how do you focus?

Hi I used the shutter release at about 12/15 feet with auto focus Macro lens. Worked well. Should work at about 10M👍

Q: This isn't working with my lumix dmc g7 (all instructions followed and lights coming on but no connection with camera)

Have you attached the wire from the receiver unit to the flash synchro socket? (should be displayed with the flash symbol on it) I don't want it to feel like I'm teaching you to suck eggs but just covering all points.
