As Pertinent Today As It Was When It Was Written… Perhaps More So
I haven't read 'the Republic' since high school & find it's even more pertinent in today's political insanity than it was when I was growing up. I found it amazing then, I find it positively electric now. If today's students & democratically inclined adults read this, mentally changing the character names to those of modern history they'll think it was just written over the past few decades. It speaks of the inequity between the top 1% & the rest of us, the tyranny of money & the steps a tyrant will take to keep his power. Plato also makes it absolutely clear that democracy is fragile & can be lost by inattention & complacency.

Readable
I was happy with this free translation as a non-classics expert. Worth the read for everyone!

Five Stars
Plato's classic political treatise.

Hard to read - margins small, type small, not enough space between lines
I was astonished that this book seemed to be printed on demand. Imagine: Plato on demand. But it was too hard to read. The "chapter" (i.e., paragraph) numbers were missing, as well.

A modern rendering Itook offense to.
The translation is modern speak, not reflecting the philosophical style of ancient Greece. Sanitized for kids, "servant" replacing the term "slave". Wilder publications even placed a caution at the beginning how modern views of gender, etc have changed. Could not get pass the first page. I just reordered a true rendering of this classic and I have tossed this one in the trash.
