The Miraculous Review: Much more than an engaging read - To say that this book was great because I couldn't put it down would not do it justice (although truth be told I couldn't put it down and finished it well into the night that I started). I think it's missing the point to recommend this book only for those who have experienced loss. The book's point is _everyone_ will experience loss, even if they haven't yet, and thus I would recommend this book to any child (that said, this would now be my go-to recommendation to any YA, or even adult, who has experienced loss). Death is explored is a very real but beautiful way. It is often more comfortable to gloss over the nitty gritty details of death, the things that those who don't experience death aren't aware of, but instead the book brings them to light and is not afraid to show grief's spectrum of emotions and its longevity. But I think, more importantly, there is an enormous amount of resolution and hope at the end, something very much needed in this and seldom had. It was wonderful reading about something Real. The pages of The Miraculous (both the book and the titled miracle journal) are saturated with realism and magic, love and loss, laughter and tears. The story is compellingly written and beautifully told. I so enjoyed riding my bike alongside these characters as their mystery and friendship unfolded. I hope Jess Redman doesn’t stop with her debut.
