Guitarist/vocalist Gentry Densley. Let's talk about his sound for a moment. The tuning is a couple steps down and fortified by a tone as fuzzed out and bottom heavy as any bass has the right to be. There's a clarity that comes through atypically of low-C Neanderthal-isms. His playing reminds me of the snake on the artwork. When he's not pounding out thunderclap drones that draw comparisons to you-know-which-band, he knows just the right moments when to scrape out some sustained barres and create tension with harmonics. Take the introduction of "Lorca (Adan)" as an example of setting an ominous tone. Hi-hats punctuate sinister minor chords leading into throat singing and a sprawl of screeching guitar. Volume builds. The same theme is explored louder. The subtleties here are very rewarding. It's like the trepidation you'd feel about exploring an abandoned house, taking each door slower than the next, the dread growing with each knob turned. Musical references, as specified in interviews include John McLaughlin and even some heavy blues. This is more felt channeled through the spirit of the playing than in direct homage as you're not going to hear Densley and drummer Tyler Smith go into any groove that could pass for Mahavishnu Orchestra anytime soon, but there's a spacious and even relaxing aura to Eagle Twin that often has me closing my eyes and reflecting rather than banging my head. Though there's plenty of that too.Much like their debut release, one cursory glance at the themes and quotations presented on the beautiful record sleeve tells almost everything the listener needs to know. This is some advanced concept, dare I say scholarly researched material. As someone with no religious background who doesn't understand the biblically evocative lyrics, it isn't conducive to enjoying the music.
