It is full tanged with a cotton cord wrapped tsuka or handle. The wooden saya, or scabbard, has a matte black finish. The tsuba, or guard, is metal alloy - as are the fuchi (collar) and kashira (buttcap)- and stamped with a beautiful twilight scene. It has double mekugis, or pegs, and is razor sharp right out of the box. It is an exceptional sword, especially for the price. Review: Firmly a $50 katana - Keep in mind that my ratings reflect that this feels like a steal for $50. This katana is certainly not battle ready. It is allegedly carbon steel, however from personal experience I can say it isn't hardened on the outside, as it will bend if abused. If you're looking for a very sturdy blade for display purposes or at most slicing through a gourd or some pool noodles in your backyard, you'll be really happy with this sword. As soon as you get a little more ambitious and try and slide through hardened woody giant sunflower stalks 1 1/2" thick, you may bend the sword. It's nothing you can't bend back into shape, if leverage is applied in the right place. Just be aware, this thing isn't battle ready. This is hardly practice-ready. The strength of swing met with the resistance of the mighty stalk of backyard flora will do more than bend your blade. It might also shake loose the metal tsuba and habaki connecting the blade to the hilt or tsuka. Furthermore, the decorative metal rim of the scabbard or saya came loose f its own volition. It seemed held down by glue akin to the kind that holds a new credit card to a sheet of paper. I applied some Loctite and all is well now. Parts of the paint on the scabbard were chipping fresh out of the box. This accounts for lower scores on Craftsmanship and Sturdiness scores. All in all, this sword is impressive for its price. It's just worth keeping in mind a true battle ready katana will sell from $1000 to $4000 so at $50 this is certainly a steal, albeit one hindered by its own limitations. Its a well made sword though. I just wish it was 1095 steel instead of 1040. If you sharpen it yourself it can be razor sharp. I use valve grinding compound from automotive store on a leather strop and its a deadly sharp sword now **Q: Will it rust?** A: All good weapons need maintenance like oil and sharpening when used. Put in a dry place like a wall for decoration etc, it will hold well between oilings. But steel is made of iron and iron does rust under poor, moist conditions. Bottom line: take care of your sword and it will hold up well. As the saying goes, it not like the others---the tsuba is a nice silver color, with dragons, and all the metal details as we. The scabbard is a nice dark blue, to set it off from the usual black. Not sure that it's totally authentic, but in a field of 20-plus other katanas it stands out.
