If you dont do this, and u r not using bluetooth, the sound of the radar detector gets muffled, as the plastic quick release plate sits flush on the adaptiv top plate. I'll take them off do away with the rust, put them back on, then paint them. This is a motorcycle mount, you should really shouldn't include hardware that rusts. :( Other than that, I think this is a great product.
