If you have a weak stomach don't try to get through Family Tradition. I must say though that it was a surprising story with unexpected twists, although the characters weren't well developed it gave you enough to intrigue you about what would happen next, and how muck sicker can it get. Plus the sex is graphic in the extreme. I reccomend this one only to truly hard core horror afficianadoes. You will undoubtedly recognize a certain classic horror mythos that has a large following. ### ⭐⭐⭐ A mixed bag. *by C***P on June 20, 2014* I've recently become an Lee fan and have really enjoyed a few of his books. Bighead is in my all time top 10 horror novels. I don't mind the gore, the absolute horror, graphic scenes etc. Lee has a great unique knack for describing the indescribable and inventing things or taking our minds places we couldn't normally allow them to. That is even true in many scenes from Family Tradition. However, it seemed obvious to me where Lee left and Pelan took over almost alternating characters and scenes. Like Lee started it out and let Pelan take it in a different direction and not only did the new direction often seem forced or just ugly, the writing took a big hit as well. In Lee's other works, despite the graphic horror, his writing is still clean clear and inventive. But there were some strange words that one of the two (likely Pelan) especially liked (one was a synonym for chortle or guffaw I think - but thankfully forgot the word) and just used over and over and over. It was terribly distracting and annoying. I found myself just wanting to hit my kindle whenever I saw these odd repeats.Worst of all, there was nothing to like. I get it, Lee writes horrific crazy stuff. But you have to have something or someone to kind of get behind. Maybe not even like, but root for; sympathize with. Nothing. Everyone in this book was just an awful awful person doing horrible stuff and having horrible stuff done to them. So despite the horror, that's kinda boring in my book. I highly suspect the blame here is on Pelan though. I shall not pick up another book with his name on it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ WOW!!!!! *by F***Y on August 14, 2012* Edward Lee and John Pelan have collaberated on a few books together and each one has been amazing. Family Tradition is a rough,raunchy,sick story.I loved it! Pacific Northwest cannibal rednecks do some unspeakable acts to a group of people who deserve what they get....well some of them do. One redneck is a great cook though! If you are a fan of Lee then you will enjoy this book,if unfamilair with his work then give it a try. True perversity! Dark,twisted,vile,sick mindless violence with a side of dark,twisted,vile,sick sex.
