It probably would have been great if I had decided to paint it instead of trying to stain it. However, I bought this for my husband who prefers a stained finish. The wood grain look appeals to him.So I happily bought it. I have stained other projects before, cabinet doors, step stools, chairs, etc.Also note that this box is made of very very soft and open grained wood.The particular box that I received had an excess of glue all over it. The glue was present not only in the joints, but also running along the inside of the boxes. Trying a few different techniques, sanding, using a very sharp chisel to carve the glue out of the joints, etc, I was unable to remove this excess glue.Unfortunately I did not realize how bad it was until, after several hours of work, I appeared to have removed most of the glue and tried to stain it. The stain of course highlighted every spot of glue. It was a terror. I had stained it though, making it unable to be returned.I wound up enameling it instead, which had a better result. Not what my husband wanted though. Next time I'm going to just suck it up and make my own, I would probably take about the same amount of time. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Round top shadow box. *by J***G on Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2015* Bought it for someone who picked it out. We painted it and she likes it. Which is the most important criterion. The one we got measures close to 10 & 3/8" wide by 17" tall and has an overall 1 & 3/4" thickness front to back. The cubby holes will be a little less than that for depth due to the thickness of the thin 1/8" thick or so back. It's made out of a light weight soft wood. It seemed to be reasonably well put together no cracks, splits, gaps, or evidence of excess glue. A little rough here and there but nothing that we couldn't take care of with a little light sanding. All in all a nice piece for the price. I would consider buying a second one. The only difficult part was finding the right hooks to hang it with. I drilled the edges for the fasteners to keep the wood from splitting. And that seemed to work good. Next time I'll add glue blocks to the back to make hanging it easier. Hers is now home to small glass figurines. ### ⭐⭐⭐ It's ok... *by B***M on Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2014* Quality is ok but not great. In the top description it says dimensions are 15 x 11, this is not correct. Actual size is 10 3/8 x 17 1/16.
