Such an understanding is useful in understanding a device's (and measurement's) accuracy and validity. 2) The practical tips and explanations on how to make measurement alone make this an essential reference. This book neatly compliments theoretical books and papers by explaining how the typical measurements you may read about in a journal article are made and the underlying issues that contribute/take away from a measurement's efficacy/accuracy. Some of my colleagues say that because this book was written by HP people and the examples shown involve HP instruments, this book loses some value. If so, this loss is miniscule. Most photonic test instruments, HP or not, work on more or less the same principles. Whether or not you own HP instruments, you will find this book an invaluable reference. Whether or not you own HP instruments, you will find this book an invaluable reference. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Test and measurement *by M***A on March 14, 2020* Good textbook ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Valuable photonic lab reference, even after 25 years *by C***. on October 4, 2022* While fiber optic technology has advanced at a breakneck pace, the core fundamentals of lab measurements for photonics remain the same. This book gives you a very straightforward introduction to the most important ones, along with the basic physics as to why we do it this way. This is not really a quick introduction or simple overview for new lab technicians. This is meant as a reference that many people can use at different levels: the experienced techs, the junior engineers, as well as the more senior R&D scientists. Optical device manufacturers reference this book in their test data reports to explain how they were measured. This would be an excellent primer for junior/senior year college lab courses in physics or engineering. The contents remain very relevant even though it was published 25 years ago (we used it just a few weeks ago for laser linewidth measurement techniques).
