We did a light sanding and cleaned the stairs well and then got to work. It took two coats and a lot of ventilation (it really smelled for 3-4 days, even though we left the door open for long periods of time and had fans blowing the air out). It came out great - we are very happy with the results! It was pretty easy to put on - follow the directions and you'll be fine. We were a bit worried at first that there were areas that didn't seem to go on smoothly, but it evened out on it's own and at the end of the second coat it looks like a strong, durable finish.
