Do you have to buy a separate chip for each character or do the characters come with the chips?

This character is only playable in the toy box mode. As for chips each character has its own RFID chip in it. It tells the game witch character your using it also saves your progress with that spusific character. Or are you referring to the power disc? As for power disc no this is just the character. Power disc are sold separately. There sold in packs of two and its randome or you can buy the full set of power disc for I believe $170. I hope the information I provided is helpful.

All characters from 1.0 and 2.0 work on 3.0

Yes all Infinity characters (1.0, 2.0, and 3.0) can work together in 3.0 Toy Boxes. The characters level will be back at level zero.
