Review: Perfect for a Beginner - I've had the finger guide for a little over 2 weeks now. I am a beginner to playing the violin. My finger guide actually arrived after I started learning to play, which is a good thing. I am using a book to learn the basics and determine if playing the violin is something I am interested in (which so far, I am interested in it). I play other instruments, so I know what a C, F, and G (etc.) all sound like. I was doing okay with finger placement without the guide, but once I put it on...oh wow. HUGE difference in ease of playing, as well as the sound. I didn't realize that nearly all of the notes I was playing myself were ever so slightly sharp. This guide has helped me immensely and really helped my understanding of the violin. I could not recommend it enough. For installation of the guide, it could not be any easier. There are instructions that arrive with the guide, and they are clear and concise. No issues installing. For testing purposes, I took the guide back off the violin and tried installing it a few more times, and each time it adhered correctly and as if it was brand new. This is a great product, both in terms of use and manufacturing. I'd highly recommend this to anyone learning to play.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do you know if your violiin is full size?**
A: To determine your Violin, Viola or Fiddle body size; carefully turn the instrument over in your lap, or have someone carefully hold the instrument. Measure along the back of the body from the edge of the purfling near the end button area of the instrument to where the imagined line of the purfling passes through the heel or button of the neck.Violin Body Lengths: 4/4 Violin = 356mm or approx. 14 inches 7/8 Violin = 343mm - 348mm or approx. 13½ inches 3/4 Violin = 335mm or approx. 13 inches 1/2 Violin = 310mm or approx. 12.2 inches 1/4 Violin = 280mm or approx. 11 inches 1/8 Violin = 255mm or approx. 10 inches 1/16 Violin = 230mm or approx. 9 inches

**Q: Can you remove it, and then put it back again. I'd like to use it when I am working on learning to read music, but not all the time.**
A: Short answer is Yes, the only problem I found was using it with my daughter and not checking it, it had gotten a slight wrinkle near the bottom and she didn't notice, when I was teaching her to tune I noticed, I just peeled back off and reset it after tuning. It smoothed out again and was right as rain. As its made of some type of rubberised plastic it has wings that fold and stick on to itself so there is no glue to worry about and it hasn't sliped agian having been on and off a few times after that time . Its an great learning tool

**Q: Do it come with an instruction book?**
A: Yes it shows you how to install it on the violin if you buy just fretless finger guide but if you're just starting to play as a complete beginner I recommend that you also buy the song book and the chart they are more detail on how to use it they will help you a lot it, it will show you each note and where to find it on the scale and will give tips on how to bow each string look for the package on all of the three items it will be just a little more than the price of just the finger guide I payed less than 20 dollars on all 3 hope they still have that offer so you could take advantage of it.and by the way if you're just beginning to play the songs that come in the book they offer are kinda hard to play well at least I found them kinda hard because they use all four string to play some song and switching back and forth was kind hard so will also recommend you the abc ' s of violin for the absolute beginner it has nothing to do with the finger guide items but when you use the finger guide with this book you will learn faster because this book breaks everything down much simpler it will show you to play every individual string and notes on that string with warm ups and simple song on just a string and open string notes and you'll have fun learning because you will actually be playing a song and it will motivat you to keep playing and practicing all this items help me to advance quickly and I'm teaching myself hope they work for you as well and I hope this email might be of some help for you God Bless You

**Q: How do you measure a violin?**
A: If you are not familiar with how to properly position your bridge, please consult a qualified violin maker, knowledgeable instructor, trained sales person or experienced player to assist you the first time. A few moments of instruction can help prevent accidentally making your Violin unplayable. If you do not know, determine the size of your Violin by measuring the body. You will need to confirm that the bridge feet are properly positioned and that the bridge is perpendicular to the violin body. The bridge is located between the fingerboard and tail piece of the instrument. The bridge has grooves filed in it to "cradle" the strings. It holds the strings up off the body of the instrument and is made of wood. The f notches are tiny v shaped notches mid-way on each side of the f holes. After the bridge has been properly positioned, measure between the second and third strings from the fingerboard side of the nut to the top of the bridge. The nut is a black piece of bone or acrylic attached at the top end of your fingerboard, between the peg box and the fingerboard (see image above). It has small grooves filed in it to "cradle" the strings. You are measuring the effective vibrating length of the strings. This is also known as the scale length or string length of the instrument.A properly positioned bridge will always insure that your instrument has the correct scale length and tone intervals.Stringed instruments over the centuries have varied in size and scale length. Modern era violin makers adhere to accepted industry standards. If your instrument is old rely on a properly positioned bridge as the determiner of your instruments scale or string length.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not as fretless as you think
*by R***O on December 15, 2016*

The idea behind this finger guide is certainly novel, but I found it lacking in some important aspects. First, while it is made of vinyl as the description states, it does not stick to the violin as the included instructions imply, which makes it difficult to put on. I had to stretch it across the fingerboard and wrap its ends around the back of the neck, all while trying to keep it tight so no air bubbles formed and so it would not move. It does a great job sticking to itself, but securing it becomes difficult because your fingers get in the way. I eventually got it secured and tried it out using a Snark tuner. I assume you use it by pressing the string directly over the circles and squares, and doing this I found that the note positions are out of tune, usually slightly sharp. Toward the top of the fingerboard they sound fine while plucking the strings, but measuring them with the meter they're sharp, and they get more off key the further down the fingerboard you go. It is especially noticeable when using the bow. The order of the notes is accurate, but with the positioning being slightly off I question how valuable this thing is as a learning tool. Plus, it is difficult to see at all when you are actually playing the instrument as the thing faces upward toward the ceiling and it's difficult to tell if your fingers are fully on the shapes. I'm using it on an electric violin, so I don't know if that makes any difference with the finger positioning, but if it does vary for different violins, then considering the price I think the tried and true method of strips of blue painters' tape would suffice. Update: After reading over other reviews I decided to follow another reviewer's advice and trim the top of my finger guide. By trimming about 1mm off the top of the guide I got it positioned where the fingering marks are now accurate. Fretless Finger Guides has made it abundantly clear through responses to people's non-five-star reviews that this particular product is absolutely made for violins whose string length from point-of-contact on the nut to point-of-contact on the bridge is 330mm. I measured my violin at 327mm. Since my violin has its bridge mounted on a platform it cannot be adjusted, so I'm stuck at 327mm. But by resizing the guide myself I was able to make it work for my violin. Additionally, if you stretch it very tightly around the neck it stays in place quite well, even without using any kind of cleaner. With a little effort it's quite easy to achieve. I have increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars to reflect the newfound usefulness of this guide, but by Fretless Finger Guides' own admission not all violins are the same, and as such it falls short of 5 stars because it could be improved to include trim marks for violins that are slightly less than 330mm in order to make it more universally applicable. Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase and would recommend it to others as a useful learning tool for first position.
