Review: Almost unbearable suspense writing; terrific book - I wonder why some people think that this book is less than representative of Seymour's best work. For my part I think it's the best one of the five I've read of his. Certainly the suspense towards the end is unbelievably gripping and while I was reading it I found myself getting genuinely angry at any interruption, so keen was I to find out what happened. Seymour has the knack of writing sympathetic characters on all sides of whatever conflict forms his books' backgrounds, so that the reader's sympathies are constantly torn between one character and the next. First you're on the side of the police, then the victim's, then the terrorists' - all of them come across as as rounded human beings (if warped in most cases), with feelings, inadequacies, fears, love, envy and greed, just as we all have. Mr Joe, above, writes a great synopsis so I won't bother with another. However I think that perhaps the reason for people's dissatisfaction with this one is to do with the fact that it deals, perhaps, with issues that relatively few people have a direct connection with (the political extremism in late 70's / early 80's Italy) and so have less to identify with.

It's less taut but equally good at drawing together disparate strands to form a compelling read. Some characters lack credibility but the central terrorists are all too credible and a chilling reminder of what Europe went through in the 70s. The ending is as bleak as anything Seymour has constructed but overall this is a satisfying read.
