So far I've used multiple strands of the same color to count as a strand for kumihimo braiding and this works extremely well for bracelets and anklets with a very fine design but without creating a bulky gauge to wear. The finished braided strand was still small enough to accommodate a bead with a larger hole to add details or charms.
