The idea is that the lamp flashes in time with the bed shaker's pulsations. You can choose to turn the lamp on whenever you want (like as a reading lamp) by clicking the large yellow button. The light will not just turn on and stay on though, if the lamp is being utilized as part of the alarm clock cycle.As the other commenter mentioned, you do go through more bulbs when you use the light flashing feature but it is totally worth it. I would recommend plugging a lamp you don't care about into the alarm clock if you are worried about the constant on/off/on/off wear and tear that the alarm may have on the lamp itself. **Q: How do shut off audible alarm and leave the shaker on?** A: There is a choice to use either alarm or the shaker.
