The visible black balls simply protect the walls and moulding in your house from damage, but the real key is the VERY heavy-duty white nylon sliders on the bottom. In 9 months, I've only worn them down less than 1/16th inch, and have over 1/4" left. I found them very easy to assemble, and they've NEVER come apart. I suspect that most of the low-star ratings complaining about "falling apart" were never put together correctly in the first place. They have often become useless without that tip. Also the would be difficult to put on and off a walker. I was amazed that these were easy to put on my walker. So far, they are great. I haven't had any trouble, but watch out for rugs.
