You can even subscribe to receive a new filter every 6 months which gives you 20 percent off. I love it because it is a reminder to me to replace. Otherwise I'll go well past the 6 months, which probably isn't healthy. So yeah, go to the Aquagear website if you prefer their filters over this filter. **Q: How can you tell when it's time to change the filter?** A: Jeffery - great question. An Epic water filter will filter about 200 gallons of water (Brita will do about 40). As the filter gets closer to the 200 gallons, it will get slower and slower at filtering water until it no longer passes water. That's when you know it is time for a new filter. Keep in mind, the more contaminated your water is, the shorter the life of the filter. On average, we are seeing filters last most customers between 4 and 6 months depending on usage and water quality. Personally, I like the fact that my filter gets slower over the life of the filter so that I know it is actually working. I had other brands in the past and they keep filtering water way past their expected life at almost the same rate and I always wondered if they worked. Thanks, Joel **Q: My first filter took about 5-7 minutes for the water to filter through. My second filter the water pours right through in seconds. Is it defective?** A: I am on my second one. The first was in the white case and filtered in a reasonable time. The second is in the grey case and takes four to five hours. I am on auto-refill on this one and intend to shut it off. A white is on the way so we'll see how it works out.
