A subscription would be required. As far as I could tell while we tested this unit, It's essentially an Android Stick (Chromecast-like device) that you can load other apps to. This one just comes with pre-loaded OptiSigns player and can be configured to use OptiSigns at startup. **Q: What can be done with this device without a subscription?** A: Nothing after the first month which is why I sent mine back **Q: how much is the subscription?** A: I paid for a year, it was 108 dollars per screen. I use 2 screens so it was 216 dollars.
