Overall it seems solid enough so would surely suffice as a gate lock for most people. As others have noted, I would comment that the drill bit that arrived was completely unsharpened. All the cutting edges were rounded over like a spoon, as if just manufactured but not sharpened. I have a belt grinder, so it took me 30 seconds to sharpen and it cuts very cleanly, even through oak.
